The Ealing locksmith shop bought Lord Kearney's SV 114 pin and cam last year and I get a lovely read off it. Long, short, nothing, short, nothing. Load the pins and get a good chunk straight away but then the binding doesn't follow. Could be the oil?
This topic is fascinating reading, mainly Stuart's post about pins 3 and 6 not binding. Why so? It won’t go through so something must be stopping it. Why doesn't that bind? You also mention the ABA pattern. 3 and 5 on this lock have the same lift height, obviously, but they are not the same. The 'nose' on one is shorter and the other has an anti pick notch above the gate. These levers also feel bound as pin 1 can bump them against the bolt. A mis-read inevitably follows. The nose cut off the lever is the rapid drop lever. This helps the levers lock over the stump. On a 114e the rapid drop lever will either be a 1 2or a 3. So a reader key in the un lock direction will show its position. Not sure why they don't bind on 3&4. Your lock you do not snap the curtain but you do get a read. However these do not read in groups but rather increasing i.e. No mark small mark then slightly high than the last on the other lifts.
With the hard plate this lock was sold with a removable one. So down to whoever fitted lock whether they put it on. Oval hard plate is the I'd feature of this lock. Aha. Ealing locksmith I think I've sussed the lack of binding. Anti pick is below the gate and when the clunk happens the anti pick lifts the lever slightly so it doesn't bind on the pin. Can't think of a systematic work around for internal door locks yet. So for instance if you didn't want to use the reader keys this operation of opening this patio door lock would be a lot more difficult as changing pins to see which one binds and not and working through the whole system to see if the 3s and 6s are actual the heights or not of the sheer line so in theory i would imagine it is a lot better to use the reader keys. OK. I see what you mean about the reading on this older lock. Marks get incrementally bigger with the lifts. I was trying to do it with the 114's nothing, short, long marks.
So what I meant was that when the true gate is a 5, the pin you start with from the 1, 3, 6 read would be a 3 and this is higher by enough to grab the edge of the anti pick. When you tension the tool and get a clunk feeling it nudges the lever into the anti pick a bit more and raises it above the lift of the cam. Then that door handle with lock lever feels free on the wiggle knob but is in fact bound. All supposition really. may make a cover and see if it's observable. I think the reading makes it quicker if it has levers that can be read. Puts you in the ballpark. I haven't managed to get a reading from an 'E' that I could reliably translate but I've not had many goes at French door locks since I worked out that the curtain edge was blocking the reader key from pressing up against the lever backs. I filed it right down to about 1/3 the blade width and all the way down to the shaft so it can turn a bit beyond the curtain. Now Ealing locksmith are getting readings, but they all look the same. |
