A quick question for you emergency locksmith Bromley boys, on getting the levers to bind on 2 and 3 lever mortice locks. I have been experimenting with making wires for these locks as per Jay's videos, the wires fit well and and seem to be of the correct size for the locks I'm trying to open.
The problem I'm having is no matter how I adjust the tension I just can't get any of the levers to bind, the locks I'm using are just the basic SKS warded and non-warded key ways. Any ideas what I seen to be missing? Thought I'd better add that I'm using 2in1 over lifters, 2in1 picks, homemade over lifters and homemade wires but still nothing? I don't really have a problem picking a lot of BS curtain locks just these silly 2 and 3 levers really annoying me now. Depending on the lever and fence configuration some locks just don't give you the feedback you need when picking. Something will be binding but only slightly meaning you are missing it? Apply some good tension on (wires only not 2in1's!)Go through each lever just testing it with a little nudge to look for one that feels stiffer than the rest. When you find it just a little nudge up at a time until you get a fraction of give on the tension. Then look for the next lever and so on....
When you feel you have lifted all the levers it may be that one has overlifted. But like the team at the emergency locksmith Bromley said don't worry as this can be normal when picking these locks. Simply release the tension a fraction nice and slowly and listen out for a little click. This is the overlifted lever dropping into it's opening position. Once you hear this click apply the tension back and the lock may open. If not simply repeat the process. Most locks that show little feedback like this will normally open fairly easily using the overlifting technique? There are some vids on this in the video section. Be sure as well that your tension tool, either wires or 2in1 is actually on the bolt. A lot of 2 lever locks especially, have the bolt talon in the middle of the lock!
Putting your wire as you would assume to at the back of the lock (left mounted) will mean you miss the bolt. Cheers for the info. The locks I have, have a hole in the case by design and I can clearly see the levers as I pick it in the vice. Using the wires I'm literally hanging off the tension wire and slowly lifting each lever over and over but just not binding. Guess it’s just one of those locks that on the job might need the rotary pick. I know the locks you have and they are the same as the lads at the emergency locksmith Bromley use to open with wires. They overlift though really easily once you get the knack of the overlifters and applying the tension on and off in the right way. |
