Hartlepool 24 Hour Locksmith said these sliding patio doors were installed about 25 years ago and the door locks by turning the key. Problem is that the key is difficult for the elderly owners to turn now. I cleaned it out and oiled it well which made it easier but the owners still struggled.
Anyway, I was wondering if there is a set of locking handles that can be installed giving the elderly couple more leverage and making it easier to operate. As you can see the euro is upside down - not sure if this was by accident or it's designed that way - and turning it around (if it's possible) would be a problem because of the position of the existing handles I suspect that's why it went in this way around. How is it when the door is in the open position with the key? Nice and smooth, or still tight to lock? I adjusted the rollers so the door is level, it had dropped and was out of alignment. I could lock and unlock it no problem but they both have arthritis in the hands. They told me it had always been a bit difficult. I was just wondering if there is a handle I could install to make it easier for them.
Not too much that you can do really, without a retro fit, and even then the lever handle type are quite small handles? I can see there are no security bolts on the door and probably no anti-lift. I'm guessing though that if Hartlepool 24 Hour Locksmith find the cylinder hard to operate, then security bolts would be a bit of a mare. What about a TT cylinder? If it hasn't got it I would also put some ant-lift fixings on as well. It would make sense, if as you say the key is easy to turn with the door slid open, that there is some friction somewhere when the door is closed, preventing the bolt/hook to locate freely. Worth a bit more investigation. I recently had one that took me a bit of time to realise that despite all looking right, an underplate (sat beneath the main keep) was ever so slightly different and just adding a small amount of side tension and stopping the free movement. Could also be the internal, back edge of the hook, struggling to fully extend if catching the back edge of the keep. (Feeling like the door needs to into the frame further) Finally, if it has small shoot bolts, check the bottom hole/keep is clear and deep enough and the bolt can go to full position. Sorry if any of this is sucking eggs type thing, just trying to add a few thought processes.
It has a top shoot bolt but not one on the bottom. When the door is pulled back about 4 inches the shoot bolt goes in to a protruding keep which I suppose is meant to allow the door to be opened and locked for fresh air but with some security still. The only reason I was able to lift it at all was because it had dropped and needed adjusting. To be honest I'm not sure what a TT cylinder is but I think your idea of a security bolt into the bottom of the frame is a good idea and would make them happy too. Well Hartlepool 24 Hour Locksmith I must have had a blond moment Embarrassed? The hook keeps are riveted to the frame - no adjustment there but I'll take a look for a back plate on the centre keep. |
