Kentish Town locksmith guy said he checked everything over to the best of his knowledge but could not find anything out of place. I'm still finding my feet so if you can shed any light on the above it would be greatly appreciated. Have you checked the centre case.
Sounds like it was made in Australia as their water goes the opposite way down the plug hole. Assuming you disconnected the gearbox from the strip and retried lifting and lock without success then I guess something in the gearbox has been inserted upside down or similar. If it works correctly with strip detached from gearbox then obviously the strip was connected incorrectly. What make etc was the mechanism? Does anyone know where I can get an old style GU 45/92 gearbox? I just need the gearbox but if it's not available is there a replacement I could use? The mpl is in a composite door, rounded ends, and has 2 little tongue bolts. Look at duffells sounds like a mpl I had to replace for months back had to buy the whole strip though. I saw the one in Duffells but I was hoping to find just the old style gearbox. There have been quite a few negative comments about the new style.
This isn’t the old style Tripac, it’s the new style, Aldridge do it cheaper than anyone else, the old style exists nowhere on this planet. It’s been asked many times You have to retro fit the new style, wedge bolt positions are identical, latch and dead bolt you have to drop the receiver 10mm or so and back fill. You can hacksaw off 1/2" off the back of the case where the inner 'grey runner' snaps and remove it thru the gap you made ie, the existing 8mm gap at the back of the case - make wider to extract the broken piece. The lock can’t jam ever again. The handles droop of course, but maybe retrofitting sprung handles can make it seem all cushty. something I have done before for cost conscious customers. Spot on what Kentish Town locksmith says, also just need to chisel the strap recess square to let your new one in, as usually rounded ends on the composite doors round our way.
I have been thinking about it and had decided to do it that way because it would be easier than trying to round the ends. Your comment just makes me happier that it's an accepted idea. I used a flathead screwdriver to prise the plate up a bit and hooked out the broken piece with a pair of needle nose pliers. Then tapped it with a hammer to straighten the plate. I just couldn't get it out of the hole in the back. Seemed to work ok after that and as you say the handles did droop a bit. Didn't realise this could be a long term fix and I had thought of putting a spring on the spindle on the inside handle you know one of those spares you salvage along the way that you guys at Kentish Town locksmith recommend. |
