Nice one locksmith Canary Wharf, thanks fellas I'm doing a UPVC course in a couple of weeks so as it’s a no rush job for friends I've decided I will leave it until after the course. I'll let you what it was.
Got a job to go to on Thursday with a GU mpl failure. The property is only 7 years old so the question is? Would you say the mpl would have the new style GU lockcase/gearbox or the old one? I carry the old one on the van. Would say it should be the new one, but you never know how long the doors have been in storage before they were fitted. It was a 45mm backset old style! Typically. I didn’t realised the 45mm was now discontinued! It was on a wooden door so i adapted to fit the 35mm backset, tiny bit of filler to fill where euro hole was, customer happy. Wedge bolts? The new version of that fits in OK in most cases, although occasionally the keeps have to be moved. And of course the centre keep as the draughtsman couldn’t be arsed to keep the latchbolt and deadbolts in the same places!
There are new, wider Keeps available for the deadbolts on the new-style strip, but the old ones can be filed out if you have a decent Powerfile/Handfile and the will. Didn’t they bother with the latch and dead bolt on these? Everything else drops in sweet, sometimes have to chisel a tiny bit out for the back of the strip around the wedge bolts. The locksmith Canary Wharf thought it would probably be one painful job, with one of these today started with the first one crushed in transit no snib placky door type from the old one piece lock. Dam thing worked fine out of the door but in the door (door open) it just wouldn’t have it, must have had the thing in and out of the door 9-10 times, bearing in mind the previous lock had been in 25 years odd. Every time back in the door and 22mm strip tightened up just couldn’t throw the key? I opened up the routing by the 2 dead lock cases cos the linkages are pretty big but this shouldn’t have made a difference cos like I said the one piece had been in the door for ages, anyway finally the last time I put it in it worked, tried it 30-40 times but its one of them were I really wasn’t happy walking away from it.
Just wondering if there is anything I should be looking out for when fitting these. The last one I did I had to leave face plate of to get it locked, face plate twisted. Never done one on a upvc door, if I get a sticking lock the first thing I do is loosen the handle fixing screws. If you over tighten the handle screws this can put enough pressure on the lock case to stop it working. Sometimes you have to relieve the mortices ever so slightly, some of the replacement cases are thicker than the original. If you go back stage by stage first loosen the handle screws then the euro retaining screw then the faceplate screws. On some lockcases you have to watch which screw goes into the top of the case, middle and bottom ,seen some with a shorter middle screw though you guys at the locksmith Canary Wharf workshop. |
