Well locksmith Carshalton once all is correct, place the front plate back again, and making sure the two legs line up with the slots on the back plate, tap lightly until the two half’s are once again joined.
Don't forget to use a piece of wood between the hammer and front plate to protect it, and only use a light tapping, checking frequently that the legs are lined up. Once they're through, punch the back of the legs to spread them a bit, so they fit into their slots, and work a very small amount of Unibond Metal Repair into the two slots, to help keep everything in place. That's all there is to it. I give talks on the story of locks. There are numerous societies seeking interesting speakers, most pay expenses and some even pay a fee, so this can be an easy way to put yourself about. The amount of material needed for 30-40mins is not large. There are Rotary, Probus, U3A, historical societies, neighbourhood watches. Lever padlock rapping I gave a talk recently, and an old gentleman mentioned a method of opening lever padlocks I haven’t heard mentioned since the 1960’s.
Through to the 1960’s, from most of the 20C, lever padlocks with 4levers (and even 2) were common on shops, factory yards etc., by Belfry, Squire, and numerous other makers now long gone. In my youth, most serious locks were lever, there were still many warded padlocks about. I only recall seeing pin tumbler padlocks on electricity installations — they used cast bronze Yale padlocks. The method is to turn up the padlock so the shackle pivot is downward, and if unlocked, the padlock body would drop down open leaving the shackle still hooked through the staple. Then say the team at the locksmith Carshalton the bottom of the body is hit in a direction towards the shackle, with mallet, etc. this causes the lever to set back [‘upwards’] by inertia — and the bolt can slide down by gravity when the levers unlock it. This is effectively the reverse of overlifting. It was well known to pre and postwar burglars. A common ruse was to knock off the padlock of a yard gate and replace it with a similar-looking one. When the night duty copper came around to shake hands with padlocks they did that at least once on all beats every night back then he would see nothing amiss. Then the burglars would drive in with a (stolen) van and the look-out locked the gates behind them. He opened the gates from outside when called, and the coast was clear, locking the gates again after they drove away. There would be some delay in reporting the burglary, as next morning the foreman found his key didn’t work I’ve never tried this, and given my inability to overlift locks probably wouldn’t succeed anyway. Has anyone over at the locksmith Carshalton heard of this, or tried it? Or encountered it being used these days. |
