I'm assuming locksmith Chingford it has concealed releases if it has a full strip mechanism? You never know though so really the first thing to try especially if as per the post the hooks are already released.
Love the job where you get a 2 lever on a set of French doors, keys lost etc, turn up release bolts and just push the doors open! Without the customer watching though. The one I had a few days back was key would not fully turn to unlock the cylinder and handles were solid. Snapped cylinder out but handles were still solid so assumed something in gearbox had failed and broken loose and was jamming it up. After a lot of faffing around and by sheer luck I finally got the door to open by wiggling the handles and with a lot of tension. On opening I saw it was a fullex sl-16 strip the kind where the retaining screw for the cylinder goes in between the two portions of the main strip, the problem was the screw had over time worked loose and was jamming the strip from sliding. I should of realised this could of been the case by the fact that when I went to snap the cylinder is was very sloppy in the case. Simple solution for this is to snap cylinder out and with needle nose pliers pull the retaining screw into the lockcase as far as it will go and then this will free the handles and strip up.
Can anyone in the locksmith Chingford shop help please? This looks like an Avocet 35/92/62 with two hooks and four rollers. The problem is that from the top spindle: the top rollers are 175 and 730 and the bottom rollers are 210 and 820 and when I look up these measurements the first numbers for the top and bottom rollers have pins and where mine has pins they have rollers. The hook measurements are OK though. Is there a way for me to move the rollers, I can't remember if the customer has a strip or separate keeps I know. I should have made a note. Don’t waste your time, Avocets are so cheap just buy an avocet 2 hook 2 roller and full length keep as they drop straight in. It will be a full length keep on the job you have been on.
I constantly hear of folk trying to source an exact match for the faulty mechanism. Personally I replace with whichever one is in stock on the van that will suit purpose. For instance say I come across a Mila 2 roller, latch but no dead bolt. I replace with a GU 4 roller with latch and dead bolt, I also change centre keep nobody can say that I haven't made the property more secure and it makes it a one stop job. Using this method plus a wide selection of replacement gear boxes makes the job a one visit job therefore more profitable. I have a fairly newly fitted old style GU mechanism that has seized up. The normal pushing hard on the handle does not work on this one believe me. It’s on a strip with 3 deadbolts and a latch. I have managed to ease the door to get to bottom deadbolt but it's solid. Have put a small hole into lockcase just to double check it is unlocked and it is. So have left it for this evening and returning in the morning and I am looking for ideas from you boys in the locksmith Chingford workshop. |
