Locksmith Chiswick priced up a safe over 10 years ago and they said they would just box it in, 10 years later the place go renovated and they were called to open the safe, There is no such thing as an easy opening on a safe,
Why do safe engineers charge the prices they do, because it cost us a lot of money (my last count was about 60k upwards) for example the drill rig I use cost me £2000.00 & i have over a £1000.00 pound in drill bits, but even with every tool on the market you still need to know how to use them. I’ve had a look at old shop premise about to be converted to a community centre by a local community group. The building has grown and evolved through a couple of centuries. About 1960 it became a chain supermarket. At that time the company built a small strongroom at the back.
The door was re-used from one of the company’s older shops. The supermarket lasted couple of decades and closed mid-80’s. Since then the premises had a variety of occupants, who as far as known did not use the strongroom. A block of wood was fixed to the inside face of the lockcase cover to prevent the door closing fully so nobody could be shut in. And the bolts have been thrown and locked. Now no key is available. The group told the locksmith Chiswick shop they would be happy to have the strongroom in use sometime. Other possibilities are to leave it disused as it has been for c3 decades; or demolish it. That would be laborious, expensive, and shifting the door outside … . At present the group has no income, but local fundraising, and some local tradesmen are among the volunteers. The door is a Chatwood, having one double-bitted invincible lock mounted near the door edge, with a circular swinging key cover. There is a T handle also near the door edge. The door has 2 dog bolts, throws one bolt upwards into the head of the doorframe, and one downwards. There are 2 bolts on the opening edge. All bolts are of round section, now lightly rusted. Clearly the instruction to apply a grease gun to the hinges twice a year has been ignored for many years. The keyhole escutcheon and T handle are plated (nickel/chromium?).
There is a label saying Chatwood Shrewsbury, so must be no earlier than 1933. Chatwood merged with Milner in 1956. I would almost call it a ‘bookroom’ door, but it does seem quite thick. It has a groove at the edge, which would resist wedging. If the bolts were withdrawn, the lock cover could be removed. With the lock in my hand, I could make a key. However, as it is, it appears to us in the locksmith Chiswick workshop that the cover cannot be removed with the bolts thrown, despite the door being open. (We didn’t know it was going to be a strongroom; I might be able to obtain pictures if that would help.) |
