So back went the first new mechanism locksmith E17. Customer really happy and surprised at my dedication to sort it out. Hope I don't get another like that. Can I just say though, everyone on this site is so helpful and as a newbie locksmith, I would like to thank you all for your help in this small that turned out to be big matter.
Aluminium Door Mechanism /Handle I got called out yesterday to see to an aluminium door which locked fine, but the latch didn't work (jammed in, and the plastic 'latch holder' on the faceplate wasn't on). I gave it the usual squirt of GT85 and a poke with a small screwdriver, but suspect the latch spring is broken. It appears that at one time the door had shoot-bolts (as there are receiving holes in the frame) but apart from the deadbolt and latch, nothing else. The Customer isn't worried about security, as this is an inner door, but would like the latch to work. Anyway, I removed the faceplate and the Euro but apart from the handle spindle, there didn't seem to be anything else holding the lockcase in. Is it possible/likely it is actually 'one' with the door? There was also no obvious way to remove the handles believe it or not locksmith E17.
No screws visible at all, only black plastic pieces top and bottom of each handle. I've come across some similar ones, but they've all had screw heads visible. My instinct is that the handles just somehow clip onto the black plastic pieces, but I'm reluctant to force anything. No grub-screws on the handles either. Assuming I get the handles off, and can get the lockcase out (though I can see nothing else holding it in!), and assuming the latch can't be made to work, I'm considering fitting a Euro Sashcase (backset permitting). I've uploaded a few photos, and would welcome any advice/thoughts about this. Seems a hell of a lot of messing about, just to get a latch to work, but I want to sort it out if practical. Incidentally, the Customer told me that the handles never knocked-up, that they just come down to operate the latch, like a conventional internal door handle. This is like one we put in the other week with the big red key. But the only visible screw was for the euro. It did have Yale stamped all over it if that helps anybody. Same set up with the handles no visible screws or grub screws. Looks like a cover over the handle, the screws will be behind it, tease off the cover with a small flat screwdriver. You need to prize the handle covers way to get to the retaining screws. They clip into the top and bottom plastic parts. The screws will be only on the Inner handle (secure side) so you only need to remove that side. Locksmith E17 said the handles may also have small grub screws holding the spindle so you will have to remove this from one side as well to get the handles off. |
