I have been called to a job in the locksmith E9 shop area to open a mortise lock fitted to a French door I think that I have identified the lock as a Burgundy coloured Gibbons 5 Lever BS. The gauge is either 5 or 5.5. Any advice on the best method of picking?
If I am right they are sliders like the legge lock there are a few rebadged versions some are square notch if it is the sliders lift all tight levers until it jumps back look for the binding lever and lift it out. Repeat until it opens no need to reset the lock. went to a job today to replace a sashlock and when i got there the first thing i saw was it was a chubb. I removed the lock and opened it up. It had the same lever types as the 110 and this thing was big. The owner is insisting on a like for like replacement but I just can’t find one. The only chubb 110's i can find are deadlocks, have they stopped making these now? And if so what is a good replacement for them as in same size case. Chubb 3r35 is a latch only and the 3k70 is the sash lock Been asked to help a fellow locksmith E9 out on opening a container tomorrow. He's convinced the 2 mortice locks are the Legge greys. I have tried picking the one I have but can't even get the levers to bind, anyone got any tips on these locks?
Find the lows and nudge them 1 mm out the way and keep going through the pack eventually something will bind Think I’ve found the problem, the CB standard pick wires will not lift the n0.5, 6 and 7 levers high enough to reach the gate. Best if you can make your own wires really. Open up any old locks that you've got, and make the wires to suit so you'll have them in the future. I get on much better with the ones I make than the standard CB ones. I also use a slightly thinner gauge wire, and generally a slightly longer upstand. Shortly after I started seriously picking BS locks I made a wire with a 14mm upstand for Union 2134s out of 17 g wires, and it worked a treat. Its a few mm's longer than the CB ones, but works well for me. Re these the newer cheapy ones with the shiny bolt the locksmith E9 said not to use. They really are hard to get started the levers always slip back. They are exactly the same as the legge black and asec but it’s called the value lock. all are 04 onwards which means the 5 and 6 lift is different to the pre 04 locks.
Easy to id as the curtain pick stem when turned in the unlock direction will sit at the 7 to 2 position. They are horrible locks. I've had a few now that wouldn't work (straight out of the box) without some serious key jiggling. Once I'd taken them apart, it was obvious that one or two of the levers were sticking 'up', - I thought that was partly the reason for adding the spacers too, - to assist the sliding. I even re-tensioned the springs, but find they're a bit hit and miss. When the levers don't drop, the bolt just pushes back in too (obviously). Some work fine, others are unreliable, and I'm not happy fitting them. I won’t buy any more of these. Had exactly the same thing a few weeks ago, with an old Legge. Customer over in the locksmith E9 area said it wouldn't always open. Same scenario was happening with that one, but didn't mind it on this one, as it had been on the door about 10 years apparently. |
