Locksmith Edgware did a replacement for a 12 year-old failed Yale (2 rollers, 2 deadbolts, deadbolt and latch). Went in fairly easily really, - taking slightly longer than normal, which was mainly down to fine-tuning the three 'keeps' which have loads of adjustments, but all in all a good product.
With the 'Professional', it comes supplied as a gearbox/centre and two hook units attached to the sliders. Essentially fit the gearbox/centre, then put the hook units into the existing slots in the edge of the door, and measure how much needs to be cut off the strips (one top, one bottom). Cut to size with an angle grinder, adjust the 'throw' with the serrations on the strip, and screw in place. Then fit the 'keeps. Definitely a handy option to have with you. Probably good to have one of each of the two backsets in the 'Professional' range. There's a version apparently for Compo/Wooden doors, though I'm not sure what the difference is really. There has to be some reason why you can't use the UPVc version, on a compo door, but I'm damned if I can see it. It could be that the composite version has wider faceplate, a lot of composite door mechanisms are wider faceplate than Upvc like winkhaus cobra I think is 20mm wide. Still think it’s a cheaper and easier option to stock gearboxes instead.
Will be good to get locksmith Edgware out of a pickle though and after fitting a MPL between 6 locksmiths I’m now a Yale expert. The keeps are the main selling point for me though, much easier to adjust and pack out. Don`t see why you need a course to fit these locks, fitted one on Sat morning never read the instructions fitted the main lock and keep then the top hook and keep then the bottom hook and keep, tried them one at a time to make sure that they were working. The keeps have ample adjustment, I used stud lock on the small screws as I can`t see them staying in place. I wasn't impressed with the screws supplied, used the proper upvc screws as the ones supplied did not seem to get a good hold on the plastic very easy overhauled. Sorry Yale I will be sticking to my gearboxes.
You don't need to go on the course to learn how to fit them. However, going on the course means you go on to the Yale expert website. This may or may not increase your work, it can't hinder it though. Yes the 'course' was all about the extra exposure (at least for me) You also get a nice tour of the factory which is probably the highlight of the morning. Listen to the sales pitch and get your van stickers and website up there, can’t lose really. The guy at the locksmith Edgware shop remembers filling out some online questionnaire I was sent by Yale, asking them if they wanted to be added to their website, - this must have been about 18 months ago, and nothing to do with Doormaster. They filled it all out, emailed it to them as requested, and that was the last they heard to date. |
