The team at the locksmith Finsbury Park thoughts are well known on this proper locksmith work. Yes, satisfaction is guaranteed when complete, however I am in this trade to earn a living not show how good I am. If the customer is happy to pay, so be it if antique lock 'high value' ok.
If it’s cheaper to just change the lock, why bother wasting our time and their money? Good luck and congratulations to all you guy's that do this, however not for us thank you. For us, it's more about keeping our ability to be able to carry out this dying trade. You're all absolutely correct about it not being worth doing for the money for 'standard locks', but it's good to be able to do it just in case the opportunity to do a 'Church Lock' or other worthwhile one comes along, which I'd normally charge about £70 for. I have to do this more often now with old safes, below is a Milner’s lock from a 1900s safe that i rekeyed. I also like doing this, makes you feel good. Is that a old 7/11 ratner you got there no i believe it is the milner, similar lock but levers are slightly different had somebody bring 6 locks similar into my shop last week , the guy just wanted a master key to fit them all which was very easy as all the levers were the same.
The key ended up being like a T shape to bypass all the wards, Isn't that where you get the term skeleton key from you explain how to do this really well .for someone like me who is not a locksmith it gives me something to do on these cold winter nights. I have been a locksmith with the team at the locksmith Finsbury Park shop for 2 years now and still have trouble with mortice locks. I assume that majority of the time, mortice locks need to drilled out if they are 5 lever and you don't have a pick. I always have trouble identifying the lock and even when I do I’m not 100% sure if I am drilling correctly etc. Can anyone give me tips on:
What to look for when identifying? What to drill for if lock is mounted left and right? What size drill bit too use? I have a lock ID manual that has the drill points and pics etc so I do use that to look for drill points etc but I still get nervous with mortice lock outs and worse thing is i try and AVOID the job altogether. Top tip is to pick don't drill. Anyone can be a drillsmith but locksmiths pick. If you learn to pick correctly you will not need to I'd lock. Drilling should be as a last resort or when there is a fault. Use the icl manual and study it. Look at everything and read the I'd and picking tips. Then test yourself. It's the only way. The problem with locksmithing is it takes a lot of time to learn and continue to learn and master. One thing we at the locksmith Finsbury Park shop must emphasise is you need to practice all the time. |
