Nice one locksmith Fulham. If it is a part that needs replacing and I guess it is I'm afraid I do not have replacement parts in my toolbox. The initial call for them was to replace the lock as it was faulty. I then turned up with a new lock and to my surprise a locked door! Lovely old couple so no hardship.
No part to replace Bill, just a complete new Latch case. I stripped and rebuilt both the locks that had this problem and the fault was intermittent? So safer to replace for new. ERA BS Latch sets are naff and prone to little faults like this I have found. You also have to get the keep just right so it closes smoothly without having to slam the door! Problem with that is that any slight expansion/movement of the door can throw it out? Absolutely right. I've had several of these that have jammed, to get open/remove. It's always been the auto-deadlocking snib/tab that's played up intermittently. Don't even try to repair these as it's a safety issue, and they're not the greatest of lock. The last one jammed so badly, that even after probing with wires to sort the auto-deadlocking snib, I ended up hammering the backset up and down until it was loose enough to get it off the door.
Took a good 45 minutes to remove it. That was the second one that had failed on the same compo door (I didn't fit the first one). Replace with a PBS1/2. They're a bit better, but still have a weakness. I may be wrong here but I have had one of these where the lever on the latch had come off in the customers hand, I believe the handle is held on by a circlip, if enough force is put on the lever horizontally as if using a spreader bar type fashion the lever will come away exposing the gubbins. I inside which can be manipulated from inside the latch case, the one i had was not jammed though, just a thought as the latch will need replacing anyway i know removal of the auto deadlocking snib invalidates the BS rating yada yada yada.....but is that an option in an emergency what do you lads at the locksmith Fulham shop think? Totally remove that silly bit of metal and the spring/gubbins it operates inside? Customer can then decide to replace the whole unit or keep as is (assuming it works ok without snib). let us know how you get on and if the dead locking snib was the problem? Just to be clear, though I'm sure you know, that the part I am talking about is the additional little latch below the main latch on the side of the latch case.
Not the actual button that you press to hold the latch back. Twice recently I've failed on the older small Mila euros and also on a Zone euro. A recent leaflet drop has worked I'm getting asked now are you a locksmith near me for house lock outs. I'm not a brilliant picker but I've been around a few years. Does anyone else over at the locksmith Fulham yard struggle with some of the less super-dooper locks? First warrant I even did had a Mila on the door. Up to then had not had a problem with one but do you think the bugger would go! |
