Just came back from that job the locksmith Hampton team gave me needless to say I am now sat in front of my laptop, slightly deflated ego, about to do some more work on the website with a nice pint of strong larger next to me (£1 a can at the moment)
Just thought I'd share, if there are any tips other than my beginners luck with my first attempt please let me know, I did start to eye up the drill template that arrived today. It's early days for me and lever locks, but if the anti-picks are at the top of the levers, they're high-lifts, which seem to always take me longer to pick. At the moment I'm specialising in picking cylinder locks like Yale locks and Union locks 2134s and the variants. My aim is to get to know these locks inside-out before moving on to another. On a good day, I can get most open within 2 - 5 mins., but if they have more than one high-lift it can take me about 45 mins 'if' I can get them to open. The way I do it, is just work my way through the lever pack and build up a picture of where the anti-picks are, and which lever or levers specifically are causing problems. Once that's determined, I tend to use next to no tension to pass past the anti-pick, but it does take a decent time if they're high-lifts.
Just to follow on from this topic a bit after that disaster on the job for the locksmith Hampton boys. I just recently decided to try some SKS 3 and 5 lever mortice door locks in my stock. The 5 lever is a total pain to pick, all 5 I bought I have been unable to pick as I'm having trouble getting under the lever pack with the high lift levers. I was trying to open them to inspect the levers but on all 5 the screw heads just round off when trying to open them, so have no idea what they look like inside. I'm looking at making an over lifter pick for these, when i get the time, but for the money they cost I find these harder to pick than the new fortress. On a plus I have managed to pick the fortress locks now, thanks to the videos on here and a little encouragement from Jay to stick at it and advice on wire design.
Now I have also bought the 3 lever sks locks and these have also been a challenge, which I was not expecting. Normally on a job I just use my old faithful bit of coat hanger converted to an over lifter, no problem and in on all 2 and 3 lever locks. But on these I have noticed an (only way I can describe it as) anti over lift lever. The lever is only present on 1 lever and has a raised gate on a random lever. Now while this is not really an issue for picking, just use a 2-1 pick or wires, this thing caused me a problem on a job over in the 24hr locksmith Hampton shops area just the other day. |
