Hi locksmith Highgate team did you manage to ID the lock as a Chubb 3G114 by measuring the backseat of 40mm and putting a micro card down the side of the door to measure the bolt head at 30mm. I spun the curtain and took a look and could see the case as silver so I went with it and managed to pick the fucker! Pic above confirmed it to be a 3G114.
Sometimes drilling down at an angle into the door near the bottom of the keyway can reveal (with a torch) the distinctive angle of the back corner of the hard plate. At least it can confirm a chubb. Does anyone remember the wire we used to us to open the 3r35? Through the keyway and pull handle down? I was talking about it today and can't remember how it looked. I've just had a nightmare in that the 5 levers have popped out of the case, what's the easiest way to put them back in the correct order. 1. If you have a key use it to check the lift heights with the case open. 2 levers at least should be the same on an ABA pattern lock.
2. If you don't have a key and are using it for practice, it doesn't matter. 3. Bring it over and I'll show you! If you don't have a key reader chart, then just test them one at a time by holding them in with your thumb, then testing the lifts with the key, keeping the key true to the lock as you test. As the boys at the locksmith Highgate office said there will be at least two levers the same for lever positions 3 & 5 (5 being on the bolt) The levers step up from a number 7 key height through to a number 1, with a 7 being the lowest and a 1 being the highest. Had a call to a very old house, where a bit awkward, divorced couple still living in same house, ex wife wanted 2 locks changing so ex husband can’t have access to her private rooms. Original horizontal mortice locks, found an old key that fits one. Went to remove other lock, couldn’t even get handles off, took screws loose ,nothing moving, looks like a thread on the spindle ,as if the handle would then screw off, but very old ,didn’t want to force it just in case. sorry no photos, any advice most welcome.
The horizontal lock cases I’ve worked have a small screw in the underneath of the handle, can be a pain to remove. Had a look for that, hole there but no screw, thinking about it, now wondering if screwhead has snapped off! That’s what happens to a lot of the old horizontal locks, that screws are so hard to get at, with them being underneath they snap off. Drill through the screw-holes. Fire GT85 in. Maybe give them a tap with a rubber mallet (unless they're antique porcelain, of course!) They should give in, and come off then. If all else fails, carefully cut the spindle flush with the door. You can then always replace the spindle, and it's so much easier to remove the part that's left in the knob/handle once it's away from the door. So next time we have one like this at the locksmith Highgate we will give it a try. |
