Had a few like this over at the locksmith Hounslow shop but you just need to be methodical and double check everything. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best? Yep check everything I have had a screw covered up with gunk so not apparent at all until you poke about a bit and watch for threaded spindle so the knob unscrews.
If the Knob handle has a hole underneath then there has been a screw could be that it’s been lost and the knob handle has been glued on. Duce's spindle (pat 1842) has a thread on one end, so the knob on the inside can be screwed on snugly. There are grooves on two opposite sides, so a grub screw through the neck of the knob fixes it to the spindle. Then a rose sleeve (Mace's rose) around the neck of the knob is turned so the hole in it no longer exposes the grub screw. Then the rose is screwed to the door. The outer knob is normally riveted on. This makes a much stronger handle fixing, as it does not rely on screws into the thin wood over the lockcase, as with a DT spindle. We at the locksmith Hounslow find it's normally an indication of better quality furniture. Got a chubb 5 detainer horizontal sash lock, key wouldn't turn, I have replaced the curtain and brought a new detainer set, when I put the cup back on the key just will not turn or if it does not enough to do a full revolution.
Things I've tried, completely removed and cleaned all moving parts without the levers in place all working fine, yes the levers are in the correct order, when the cap is on without the levers it is as smooth as silk, the problem appears to be with the cap. I have tried bending the cap slightly but this still does nothing, there is some marks on the lock from screws which probably is the problem but I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas? Have you checked if one of the detainers are bent or has a slight burr on it. Have you also tried with a completely different set of detainers. Tried the old set with the new bolt thrower, same problem, no burrs, happy with the new detainer set, I have tried losing off the screws on the cap, no joy, whilst holding the levers pack in place without the cap on it will lock and unlock, sometimes just catching 3/4 of the way round stopping. Get the key but I am putting this down to it being difficult to hold as you turn the key. Is this a 3j60 or a 3r35, it's the 3j60. Oh okay if it was the 3r35 there is a fire escape version that doesn't allow you to deadlock.
Sounds like the cap is distorted, give away is key not turning as it should so levers pinched together and blinding. Take a bit off with a file around the keyway, if it won’t tap out, Check depth of true gates on the levers could be blinding against bolt stump. I think I have got to the bottom of this, the lock case rather than the cap seems to be slightly pushed in as mentioned on my opening post , the screw marks, pushing the case in, I have come across this many times but it is normally more visible. Even so with this rather than try and straighten something out that is barely visible and risk damaging the door lock completely I have had to loosen off the top 2 screws and it now works, if the locksmith Hounslow customer isn’t happy now it's a new one. |
