They should be fine that is all we at the locksmith In Brixton use with the blue flat paddles the wire keeps coming out and stabs you in the hand when you try to get under low lifts. Can anyone recommend a good Mortice Lock Identification Manual? Or has anyone got a second hand one for sale?
What would locksmiths feel about having a free, online version of an ID manual? Do you reckon it would compromise security? Or would it be helpful? I’ve got the ICL mortice lock manual which is handy plus has all the drill points listed. Ive got a couple and the Angliss manual used in combination with the 5x gauge keys you can’t go far wrong to get you started. I've got a couple of curtained lever locks (none of them BS) that have spacers in between the levers. I'm trying to work out what the purpose of these are 1. They make moving the pick back and forth a bit harder, but none of these are like the Fortress where the levers rest on the curtain, so there is still a lot of room.
2. They make it easier to not slip off the lever with a wire, so you can use a wire that is thinner than would normally be helpful 3. The levers are thinner, which would make picking harder if the spacers didn't help as in 2. 4. The levers are made of steel and are very dull - they grind if put together. I guess the shiny spacers reduce this. Not an issue on locks with plated levers or brass levers though. Are there other reasons why they are there? What's the primary purpose? on non curtained locks they can prevent overlifting of the levers the ocksmith In Brixton said that's a good point. I wonder if they are the same levers, and hence the same spacers, used in the non-curtained locks in the same range? One of the locks is Sterling, the other has no branding at all - I think I removed it from a door a while ago. The true answer has nothing to do with security or anti picking etc. It is simply a manufacturer’s way of spacing the levers to allow free travel of a key bit step traveling freely between two levers without lifting the adjacent ones.
On better locks this is achieved by the belly relief milled out of the lever belly. Example Chubb 110 and 114 They can also be used to allow the same size of lock case to be used between 3 & 5 lever locks. You will often notice that some 3 lever locks have a very 'fat' bolt talon and tail, again to use up space in the lock case. I can see the locksmith In Brixton reasoning on that, but it won't prevent overlifting on non curtained locks. A good example of that is the asec 3 lever same as non curtained 5 lever with a large spacer at back I meant to say when using a dedicated 'lift all levers together' overlifting 2-in-1 on some locks of course though individually the levers could be overlifted. |
