Same as locksmith In Dagenham said but if you had bit of paint you could dab the rollers and when closing the door in frame try locking door and the paint will mark correct position of keeps, gather it was a pvc door.
If it was a wooden door you can take the twist out by closing and by looking inside if door is tight to rebate at top and gap at bottom you can chop the rebate full length with a chisel and a bit of work to do on the head of frame so door finishes tight to rebate or vice versa if door was tight at bottom and gap at top. Or you could use a router but it needs a bit more setting up. You can only do so much as a locksmith before it becomes a new door job. For the cost of replacing hinges, taking panels out door, new lock etc. etc. it’s cheaper. Jobs like this one can be more hassle than they are worth, and as you say you really have to weigh up the cost and time involved, and would a new door be the better option? I think the metal reinforces might have been slightly twisted behind the frame. That’s why I thought the frame must be twisted but it looked alright.
Do you mean stick the tape over the rollers/wrap them in tape so they leave a bit of a mark on frame with the sticky stuff sorry if that question seems a bit dense I did exactly that with the hook keep and it was easier to see where they locate as you could see with the door open. I know what the locksmith In Dagenham guys mean and that’s why I set the expectation from the off. When I first looked at it I recommended a new door but it was not an option for her cost wise. I explained I could be able to get the door to lock but it would be weaker than before and there would still be the hole in the frame on the inside. She wasn’t bothered about the hole. It does lock really tight and solid now and she was over the moon. Plus I did make a good bit for the 2-3 hours it took me to sort including running around etc. i think if the frame had been worse then I wouldn’t have touched it but 90% of the frame was really solid. The keep had took the battering though.
Probably been covered somewhere previously but thought I would post as becoming increasingly aware of guys struggling to fathom out a simple solution to non locking MPLs. Ok so you have a lock that throws in open position but not in closed, but the difference here is you don’t feel resistance on the handle and you measure re-measure and measure again and the hooks, rollers etc. are all perfectly in line? A very common problem with winkhause, Yale 2000 and other mechanisms with right angled hooks with certain dimensions. The problem you guys over at the locksmith In Dagenham is if you encounter this, is the face plate is sitting too far away from the strike, adjust the hinges towards the keep full length a couple of mm and its job done. |
