If a locksmith Kensington customer had a perfectly good PBS1/2, but the cylinder had been got at with a screwdriver in a break-in attempt and needed changing, I think anyone would have a hard time getting them to agree to pay for an entire new PBS1/2, knowing how expensive they are, especially with insurers ever more reluctant to cough-up.
I feel much of it makes little sense really, such as if a Customer has an old BS 5 Lever mortice, then that can be replaced like for like, yet a fresh-fit has to be new BS. I don't understand the logic of why an old 14mm Bolt BS is ok for some, but not for others. Surely logically, any replacement BS 5 Lever ought to be new BS. Can anyone shed any light on this please. X5 will replace it, you don’t need to replace the whole armoured front as there are a couple of pins on the back that hold the cylinder in place, did one the other day and to be honest its the only reason i carry genuine yale rims cos anything else jams the revolving disc when you tighten it up.
I have never had a customer request the back changing cos of cost and to be honest have only ever had one customer who actually knew what the key in the back was for and even they had never used it. All this talk about insurance rating in the locksmith Kensington area is, I believe, is a red herring. A lot of people now don't even have house insurance. They simply can't afford it. So my first question would be 'do you want an insurance rated lock?' A lot of folks now save money where-ever they can and Insurance is very low on a lot of peoples lists. So, give them the choice and react accordingly. I agree entirely, especially as Yale (as a Company, not so much their locks) aren't particularly respected by Locksmiths, mainly due to them allowing B&Q etc., to sell directly to the public for what is usually pretty-much our Trade price, so there is very little (if any) mark-up for us.
Just curious now, what IS the correct replacement cylinder for the equivalent BS Era? Not had to do one yet, but as I said earlier, I came across one with a bog-standard 5 pinner in. This can't be right, surely? Era do a 6 pin cylinder with a BS kite mark as well, Duffells will be stocking them soon even though they're in the orange catalogue. I'm the same on this, and 9 times out of 10 will upgrade to 20mm bolts. Only exceptions are if the customers paperwork specifies the previous BS. Most are vague though, and HAVE to be I guess, to allow them the option of wriggling out of payment. Had one on a Cottage in a locksmith Kensington area Avenue today. Standard non BS-Nightlatch on a front door and that was it, so I asked the Customer about it, and he said the Insurers didn't class that door as 'Final-Exit' apparently. I wish these rules were 'hard and fast' in some ways, and then at least we'd be 100% sure. Just a thought do get customers saying I cant find a locksmith near me? I do all the time. |
