This morning we had in the locksmith Leatherhead shop a mortice too tight for lockcase, causing all sorts of problems. Interested to know where/what sort of lock apart from old padlocks, which had poor/no rustproof treatment suffers that much rust. Are these disused for long periods?
Presumably the poor fitting was a problem from the beginning? or has a humidity/age change in the door prompted it? Sure does. The only one I saw I was in a hurry and pre-digital camera era. The lock was a 1930's 2lever(!) front door lock after half a century - surely the lever springs would be as soft as the springs in the (also original) Yale cylinder? My first guess was the problem would be the 80yr old lady's arthritic hands - until I tried the key myself! There are published reports of bees in old warded rim locks back to the beginning of 20C. I don't know how common this is. Thanks for the prompt reply any others? Poor installations probably can't be designed out, though there might be scope for improved fitting instructions. It has long puzzled me that although usually, keys are harder than the levers/talon, it's the key that wears more.
I had forgotten bent bolt/bolt tail. This can be caused by violent attack - but also by user misuse (slamming door/drawer with bolt projected). We had some in the locksmith Leatherhead shop with the levers stuck together with grease? In the last couple of months I have had 2 Era 3 levers sashlocks where the levers had broken and fallen in the keyway re the damp getting into a lock, this can be due to the escutcheons being fitting incorrectly. So which side of the door do you fit the covered escutcheon chaps? Dating back I know that the covered escutcheon was designed to go on the interior side of the door to stop the possibility of someone peeking in. I have also read that fitting the covered escutcheon to the exterior side of the door can cause dampness to remain in the lock. I've got rust on locks that have just been sitting in the van! Rusty lockcases seem to be from broken paint and the paint being applied to thinly from the manufactuers.
Mortice lock fitters in the past seemed to cut the hole to very fine tolerences to the lock and I think it's just got to tight as the the wood has swollen. I did list insects but then deleted it. I also listed paint, as in when a painter/decorator paints over the whole forend of the lock, and other times leaves filler in the keyway. A couple more I've had are, broken stump and the anti saw pins coming out the end of the bolt. Spot-on. If it's an internal door, I fit the escutcheon on the inside (unless Customer wants it otherwise). If it's on an external door, I generally fit the escutcheon on the outside. The lads in the locksmith Leatherhead shop don't think they seal well-enough to prevent them drying out. If it's fitted on the outside, it helps cut down on dirt/insect ingress. |
