Locksmith Leyton team think you have to weigh up the cost of the tool versus the times you are going to use it and therefore the return you are going to get. In 10 years i have had to do 2 of them (I mean 110 versions).
First was about 8 years ago for a crappy poor paying company so walked away from that saying I don’t have the tool to pick it (which was true), and second a few years later on a shop door and drilled it. In both cases I didn’t beat myself up about it. And of course the tools are not simple idiot proof designs and require good practise to perfect their use. It depends on how OCD you are about opening it NDE and enhancing your skills (but at a considerable financial loss). Or you could ring other local guys offering them the job if they have the decoders. The ability to pick/decode them NDE is only useful if you ever get asked to open one! That's exactly what I'm sat here wondering you guys at the locksmith Leyton, I never see them! not OCD about NDE in all cases it's just the antique door that matches 12 others in the house (it was HUGE) the customer & I agree that if it can be opened without drilling then great!
I might have a ring round some other local independents (maybe see if Stu fancies coming out of domestic retirement as it’s not too far away) Sorry to ask this but are you sure it’s a 5 lever? Deal with a lot of old church property/Presbytery’s and on the old Victorian/Edwardian doors they are usually just a 2 or 3 lever horizontal sash. No worries, small key way and curtained, 5g, and no feeling from the levers with a standard 5g curtain pick, the customer mentioned as I left that the previous owner had fitted £100+ locks (his words) but his wife, unfortunately suffering with dementia, had moved and lost the keys! I might be wrong on the ID, would the 2 or 3 lever be curtained?
No curtains mate good id, on the old doors horizontal locks I measure keyway and handle distance, found that there’s a difference between old imperial and metric measurements so normally need to move key hole over. Normally find that the Priests I do work for are quite happy to have the screw on safe escutcheons on the doors so if you need to drill consider putting these on the doors to match they look good on the old style doors also Zoo hardware do a horizontal sashlock which might improve your profit on this one, good luck. If its a detainer there is no cheap NDE solution, seen plenty picked on You-tube but never seen anyone ever pick one on a door. Not saying its not done, I'm sure it is but with a pick its more down to hours and skill than the pick. People can disagree with the locksmith Leyton but if you buy a pick you could find yourself sitting in front of one of these for 8 hours and still not open it. Even the SV pin and cam isn't fool proof, the new pin & lift is probably your best bet for a guaranteed opening but it isn't cheap. I would kill the lock and change it. |
