Well I'm still rather puzzled over this one you lads at locksmith Liverpool Street, but I'll update as best as I can for those interested.
Arrived on-site, and sure enough the key was rotating both inside and out. No matter what I tried the latch would not retract, though with the lever moved at the furthest extremity, it was almost free of the keep, only in by about two mms. The snib didn't feel very positive at all either, and the latch was hanging very slightly down, out of square. The 'auto-deadlocking tongue' was barely touching the keep as there was a bit of a gap, so technically the latch should have been easier to withdraw, but it wasn't having it. Incidentally the 'tongue' was free to move, but had no effect. After trying to edge the latch back in, I air-bagged above and below the latch, which created a small gap at the top of the latch, between the keep and latch, - just enough to slip a 'shove-it' tool in and edge the latch past the keep, though it was incredibly hard, and suddenly went back in with a 'cracking sound' as the latch retracted. With the door now open, and the mech apart, I could see the bottom part of the latch had snapped off. This is one of the pieces that the 'lever/cam parts' push against, when the handle or lock is turned to move the latch.
To be honest, I have a feeling this may have snapped when I forced the latch in, however I cannot be sure as it wouldn't retract before I arrived there, and the key was rotating full circle on both sides, and obviously something was wrong, any tips from you experts at the ocksmith Liverpool Street shop would be very welcome. There also appears to be a place where a short spring is missing, towards the bottom, which seems to tension the 'auto-deadlocking tongue' upwards slightly. I assume there should be a spring in there, though never having had one apart before I'm not sure, and there is no way it could have shot-out when I removed the back plate, as neither I nor the Customer saw it. So I am still none the wiser about what actually caused the latch to jam. Logically, it could have been the bit that had broken off the latch jamming the mech, - assuming I didn't break it while getting the door open.
My instinct is that I didn't break it, because the latch seemed to be at a very slight downwards angle in the keep, while still mounted to the door, and the fact that the snib wouldn't go in correctly, seems to show that the cut-out for it in the latch, was a bit 'out' possibly due to hanging at a slight angle. Initially while on a residential locksmith services lock out, upon opening the case, I told the Customer I would see if I could obtain a new latch, though will inform him I would prefer to replace with a new unit, as there was/is some other fault that isn't obvious, that caused it to jam in the first place. If I replaced the latch, I have a feeling that it would jam up again at a later date, so feel it's pretty pointless spending time stripping the entire mechanism down, trying to find out for sure what jammed it have any of the boys at the find me a locksmith Liverpool Street yard had any experience with this. |
