Just a little update for you guys over at the locksmith London Bridge shop, I've just drilled my first lock, 3G114E , It's one I had mounted at home and used it for picking practice, there's is a bit of a knack and glad I've given it a go at home rather than on a customer’s door for the first time.
I’ve made an L shaped wire so my hand was up out the way and I could still see clearly in the hole while lifting the levers. May be worth practicing on some from bolt side as I have found this a bit more tricky, as it says in one of the videos, drill, stop, look or check (something like that). Don’t often get called to mortise locks other than replacing them so still a little nervy when I drill them, good work! That's the rule that I use and teach people - drill, stop, check, drill, stop, check. Especially applies to RH locks as you can easily drill off the bolt tail if you are drill/picking. Going for the stump is no problem. I do have this quite a lot on warrants were there is movement in the door but lock won’t pick, however although door is moving bolt is still bound, a good pull from the warrant officer while I pick and the lock opens. A good point to remember on these era locks is that the bolt is very sloppy.
Nice drilling, drill stop check same for me I notice picking is mentioned with this 3 lever but does anyone or would anyone use the try out keys for the 3 levers I’ve seen sold everywhere? We at the locksmith London Bridge shop think they indeed work well? Think they come in a set of 15 or 19. Try Out Keys work well on a % of 2 & 3 Lever locks. The ERA's are quite a narrow lock case so the 3 Lever Keys can snag a little, but they do work on most. The bolt can be a bit of a sod on these, - sometimes because the end of the bolt is actually bottoming out on the frame, - seems to cause some sort of partially-thrown bolt.
When fitting Era 3 levers, I always try and cut the hole for the bolt a bit deeper than usual in the door frame. Just to clarify: I mean the end of the bolt touches the frame, not the sides. Try out keys do work on some locks and also the overlift method works well. By fortunate coincidence I had a lock change the next day, exactly the same one, changed the lock and took away the old one. I could see the problem I was having is the, The part the throws the bolt is located about 3-4mm up from the back of the door lock case is only a few mm thick, so I could see why I kept slipping off. Locksmith London Bridge shop have now made a wire for it, just in case the key bit was to make the hook on the wire 5mm from the back of the wire where it rests against the case to the tip, not exactly precision engineering but locates perfectly now. |
