Locksmith Peckham this is from a Chubb floor safe. Need a replacement, any one any ideas either what model, or where to get one from. It has keys, it's mounted above the floor in a big lump of concrete and some scumbag has had a go at it.
Keys that used to work fine are now really catchy. Stripped it cleaned it, made new keys but they are still hit and miss, no actual signs but wonder if something has been forced in the keyway. Rather than mess about anymore I thought I would try and find a replacement. Looks like a standard S2 7 Lever, though the bolt looks slightly longer? I had one so I adapted the bolt to be longer to suit the safe lid. S5 has keyway more central and only two fixings? S5 is a magic euro foot print 7/9 lever. Same lock as s2 but bigger footprint. From what I can see the S2 keyhole is in the wrong position, no real way of altering the lock position without major work which they won't want to do. Will keep looking for replacement. The old key was a 6g, keyway is a little worn, which might be causing the problems with catchy keys. Got some more blanks coming including some 5.5g, might be able to get round the problem.
New keys? I'm a locksmith Peckham mobile engineer I'll have you know. Just kidding, customer has keys, they are just not right. Recut/made new keys to match lock but they are not spot on, there is too much movement which is causing one of the levers to slip off the cut. If you recut to take this into account then it will lift the next lever. Did about 8 blanks to get 3 half decent keys, then I ran out. Got more blanks coming, so will keep playing till I get it spot on. Thing is the safe is in use, so had to get it back in and useable. Sorry, knew you had cut keys from your post, but what I meant was that this guy specialises in making keys to suit, and could also make good any damage/wear to the existing lock case if needed? If the safe is in use though I guess that's not an option for locksmith Peckham. I was asked to open this safe, owner had no idea what was in it, no keys. I took it on as a challenge as he was a mate and I'd never done one before. First I had to make something to pick it with, as I had no idea what lock was on the other side of the door. I could see no curtain, that was good, 2 in 1 then. First attempt at the 2 in 1 looked OK SS tube, silver solder, quite strong.
Tested it in the lock, I found a gap in the lever pack, only thing I could think of was a broken lever spring, out came WD40, flooded it, kept on playing with the levers, then they started to bind but I just couldn't get it to pop. I then decided to go back to my old method of a cut-down key and welding rod (bottom of picture). I cut the flag off because the weld is no good on the end, drilled a 2.5mm hole, used piece of welding rod as the bolt thrower, then bent a piece of 1.6mm welding rod to lift the levers. After another 3/4 hr with second tool it popped. The lock turned out to be 5 lever with 2 of the levers being a lot thinner than the rest, just a little confusing when you’re feeling your way around inside trying to build a picture of the pack. I spent most of the day on this. changed the lever springs, cut a key and put it back together. No shiny tools for this one. It was empty. All for nothing, the locksmith Peckham boys said I must be mad. |
