Locksmith Purley are off to a job tonight, where the customer on the phone has explained that they cannot open their back door, because the key no longer turns. It had been playing up for a few weeks, but now they can’t unlock the door.
If the key won’t turn, do I assume that picking the lock will not work and will need to be snapped and if it is snapped and the lock wasn’t the problem, then how would I open the door. Or could it be a problem with the MPL that it just isn’t sitting very well, in which case, how would I open the door to adjust it. The lock is a Carl F, the handle will lift upwards but not down, but I guess if the lock is in place the handle would lift up anyway. If the key won’t turn it could simply be a problem with the key could explore this first by picking the cylinder and try unlocking it, If you are reluctant to snap the cylinder you could try spreading the door open first. You could remove the handles and shine a torch near the top of the cylinder you can usually see if the cam is turning, personally I would probably snap cylinder out rather than waste too much time, carl f cylinders are only about 3-4 quid so not a major issue if it’s the mechanism, depends how busy you are as to how much time to spend on it.
The locksmith Purley knows that usually if the cylinder won't unlock it indicates a problem with the locking part on the centre case of the mechanism. Until you unlock it you're never going to be able to release the locking points. If the key no longer turns and it is definitely the correct key it's pointless picking the cylinder. In this case we'd usually snap the cylinder on the inside, then try unlock the mechanism using a MUL-T-Tool or similar. Using a MUL-T-Tool allows you to apply a bit more force and maybe just force the mechanism open. If this doesn't work, most multipoint lock cases have an override on the side that you can just see from the hole where you have removed the euro cylinder - or you can drill a small hole further up from the euro cut out.
That will be covered by the handles to reveal these highlighted on examples of an ERA, Lockmaster and Mila case pushing these back with a screw driver will usually pull the deadbolt back manually and then allow the handle to be pushed down. If the mechanism has failed in other places you will have to release these locking points as I'm sure you know. Sounds like the centre case has 'gone' the phrase been playing up for a few weeks translates as tiff to move handles which results on more pressure on the case and then it just splits. Locksmith Purley are aware that if this is the case when you take the strip and case out it may snag on the door frame. Just take your time it will come out mate. Keep us updated. It’s all euros and MPL stuff my way. |
