Not sure about you lads at locksmith Putney but I don't have a lot to do with Era Night latches, - too many horror stories LOL, but I've since found out that this particular lock is just the non-BS Auto-deadlocking Era.
This job is full of surprises, but I didn't see THAT one coming. Another locksmith near here said he was just wondering if the cause of the problem could be the keep. I went to a job a while back for a similar problem but on a Yale BS night latch. The customer had replaced the lock but retained the original keep as the new ones are shorter. Worked OK for a while then found one morning that he could not open it at all from either side. I got called and diagnosed it as a faulty lock, got the door open and replaced it, (He took it back to B&Q for a refund) again leaving the same keep on the frame, as apart from it's length it seemed identical. About a week later got another call from the guy as again he was unable to open the door from either side. Got the door open and had a really close look at everything.
Put it all back but this time put a new type keep on and immediately saw the difference. The new BS lock bolts go in further once the door is closed and I could see the bolt go home as it travelled that extra few mm. So even though the closest locksmith to me said the keeps appear identical there must be a slight difference that does not allow the full movement of the bolt and when everything is 'right' it jams up. Why Yale had to change the length of the keep god only knows so I wonder how many more there are potentially waiting to jam up. I don't really know what to make of this one. The customer referred by locksmith Putney said the lock had been on there a decent while, and then just suddenly failed. My gut instinct is either he, or his son 'repaired' it, then called me in as they couldn't get the door open at all. The latches on the original and the replacement looked identical on these, but I guess unless you're putting verniers on them you can't be sure. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the new lock is ok with the old Keep.
I didn't really want to go grinding bits out of the plaster, and I know the Customer didn't want me to. As you say, WHY do Companies change things in such a minor way? It has to be just to catch us out! LOL. I always put the new Keep on, unless it's impractical or the Customer has a very good reason for me not to, though I obviously leave the new one with them, as they have paid for it. I must say I really don't like those Era Auto-deadlocking Nightlatches. Not completely struck on the PBS 1 / 2 either, as there is a little spigot on a ring inside, that can break off easily, rendering the lock useless. I've been called to see to several by locksmith Putney that had the 'broken spigot'. |
