No name on the mechanism locksmith SE1 but it was fairly old looking. To open unlock cylinder pull handle down to normal 90 degrees then push down a further 10 degrees to release the latch.
Handle returns to rest at 90 degrees but when you put handle up to lock it there is no way for it to return to rest at 90 degrees. Customer is happy enough with what I have done but it is just very peculiar. I’ve seen something similar before the part of the mechanism which the spindle fits through (cog) had only partly broken eg piece missing so when you were using the handle the missing part was not opening mechanism it was only working when connecting with none broken part of the cog. Will eventually completely go. Ordered a couple millenco mechs today and it seems they have reverted to the old style brass internals style. Much stronger than the crappy cast ones that always fracture. Price is still the same so good news! Just been to have a quick look at 2 properties in the same street, both have the above auto locking mechanism which is throwing the hooks before they get into keeps, so the door jams ie hooks jam against keep, door stops dead before its closed.
Customer has to use key on the outside to close the door & keep handle down on the inside they are supposed to be a slam shut lock, anyone in the locksmith SE1 workshop fitted or have experience with this mechanism or had similar problems. They are handed. Highly doubtful, I know, but you never know who has 'got there' before you, or even if the Customer has had a go themselves. The keep handed to match the mechanism is a one-piece strip and can be a pain sometimes too. Just a process of elimination on these. Take the mechanism out and check to see if the teeth on the bottom of the hooks that sit on the strip, and drive them, have slipped out of alignment. They may have 'jumped' off the strip slightly, so they're out of sync. Is the door racked over enough on the hinges? Does the 'keep' require moving up or down slightly.
Difficult to say what is happening without seeing it. I'd probably remove the 'keep' and see how far out the hooks are, with regards to the slots on the upvc for the hook sockets. It's a starting point. My gut instinct is the hooks aren't meshing correctly with the strip. As you suggested, in the light of day just followed the doors path, as when open couldn't see anything wrong with the mechanism but noticed the little spring latch which throws the hooks had contact with the front of the keep. On the keep there is a raised area which is what the latch is supposed to hit throwing the hooks into the keeps, just took keeps off chiselled out 2mm put keeps back on latch goes over keeps hit target throws hooks door auto locks, job done locksmith SE1 how about that? |
