Oh yes you locksmith Shoreditch lads, the other mortice lock problem I've had is 'H' levers staying up after the key has been used. This has even happened on brand new out-of-the-box Legge. Seems to be that the angle of the springs isn't particularly efficient. I stopped fitting Legge a long while ago because of this.
In the past, mortices were cut on site by joining a line of bored holes, rather than with a router bit. So the mortice might not have completely flat sides, and when wood humidity changes, tight spots could affect the lock. Case screws coming undone? That I've not encountered; it suggests a very loose mortice? I have heard about the covered escutcheon on the inside to prevent spying through the keyhole, but when i started, it was the usual practice to put it on the outside for weather protection. Usually more could be seen through the letter box slot. Some Victorian doors had 2 covered escutcheons - maybe their large keyholes allowed more draughts. Now spider problem is a new one on me! There is a minute wasp which parasitises the nests of mason bees, and clogs them with a white sticky stringy substance. (Though i didn't have a camera, i did have the contents of my clogged log examined by a Nature Conservancy bee and wasp biologist.
The parasitic wasp was too far decayed to identify the exact species.) Just while I'm mentioning insects, there is one whose name means 'persuasive burglar' Rhyssa persuasoria. This parasitic species is the largest ichneumon fly in Britain, and one of the largest in Europe have you guys at the locksmith Shoreditch shop encountered any? Although called the 'giant ichneuman fly', it is a proto-wasp and has no sting - although at 1½" + another 1½" ovipositor, it looks pretty threatening! It is harmless to humans, but lays eggs on the larvae of the giant horntail/giant sawfly (and that is another scary-looking insect, 1½" long, black / orange banded) deep inside dead wood. They are both harmless to humans, but the sawfly is a serious pest of sawmill/timber yards, damaging freshly sawn lumber stacked to dry. I notice these things, I live in a wooden house. So far the only ones I've seen are in my woodshed. Just like the name 'persuasive burglar. My thanks to all who replied.
Overall, which sort of locks would you say you have more problems with, lever locks, or cylinder locks including uPVC mpl's, or 'other' locks? Incidentally, nobody mentioned any faults with lever safe locks. Do they have an exemplary record? It is quite common to get broken lever springs in safe locks , had a weird one recently where a local locksmith had altered a S2 Willenhall safe lock because keys had gone. He swapped the top 2 levers around , with the S2 the top lever is the only one with a gate all the rest have open ended levers, because he hadn't cut the key right and the lock was upshoot and key retaining , the lads in the workshop over at the locksmith Shoreditch managed to jiggle the key and get the lock jammed thankfully in the unlocked position. |
