Next picture from the locksmith South East London shows the lock stripped down, with the 'loose pin'. The front-plate is just push-fitted onto the back plate, so is easily prised apart using a paint-stripper blade, or knife.
The third picture shows the pin pushed back into the hole in the back plate. Just put it on an anvil, and give it a light tap, with a thin piece of wood between the pin and the hammer, to protect it, making sure the bottom of the pin is flush with the base plate. Make sure the pin is 100% upright in all directions, and using a punch, punch the base plate close to the pin all around it, to spread the plate up towards the pin. Turn the back plate and the pin over, clamping the pin tightly in a vice, - remember to protect the pin from the jaws first. Then take a punch, and placing the tip on the centre point of the back of the pin, - give it a decent tap or two. This spreads the metal of the pin outwards, making it a snug fit in the back plate. Now turning the back plate over again, find a small automotive socket from a 'socket set'. One that will 'just' fit over the pin is best. You really want one where the small end of the socket, is the same size as the area just around the base of the pin. Make sure the pin is inside the socket, and not standing above it.
Then hit the socket with a hammer a few times. This will also help spread the metal on the base plate, and push it up against the pin. You could use another pipe key over the pin, and tap that with a hammer to spread the metal, but it will have a tendency to go over at an angle, so I'd recommend using a socket where possible. For added strength, the locksmith South East London put a little 'Unibond Metal Repair' around the base of the pin. Smooth it down as much as possible with a small piece of card, or knife blade, and try and work as much as you can into the area around the base of the pin. Photo above shows the new key being tested to ensure that it will throw the bolt correctly, without any snagging. After cleaning the bolt, and giving it a light coating of oil, slide it back in, and put the lever back on its pin. Check the lever spring is tensioned, by carefully opening it out slightly.
One side braces against the inside of the front plate, and the other curls round the bottom of the lever, with the end pushed through a tiny slot in the side of the lever. These springs can be quite fragile, so it's good to inspect them carefully, and replace them if there is any doubt about their condition. Springs from levers from Mortice locks work nicely as replacements, though they will possibly need cutting down, and reducing the width slightly. Photo sent from the locksmith South East London shows correct profile of the spring, though this could do with some additional straightening, to give it greater tension. |
