Nice one locksmith Southwark, I'd like to have a look next time I'm there. I've not seen this one, only the photos that the customer/fellow lock change enthusiast sent me, so it'd be good to have a look. Very happy appreciated. Thankfully I don't need to source one, but was just curious as to what it was great stuff. It's always worth trying mica, isn't it?
Well, I didn't know what was on the other side of the door!, it can't of been shut properly but enough so the door wouldn't just push open, I can understand PBS and No1+2's going occasionally with mica but this shouldn't of opened at all. I wanted to check with a keysmith near me before I pull apart a perfectly good cylinder for a lock repair. I replaced a lock for a customer today who was locked out of home and fitted a lovely new Yale BS cylinder, after doing so the guy asked me to look at his other door (sadly for me it seems it was the only size I didn't have) but thinking a bit lively upsold him on the idea of having front and back keyed alike. I took down code for the front door lock agreed I'd order another cylinder and pop back. I called the whole seller only to be told they have to be keyed alike by yale and are pretty much double the price £38 for a 40/40 and £41 for 55/40 and that's trade. So my upsale now isn't looking quite so good.
My instinct is to order the cylinder and do it myself, but wanted to see if anyone had already done this, in case there are any nasty surprises in there and I end up ruining a perfectly good cylinder. The keys have a cat out on the end, is this just to restrict other key blanks entering or will bits spring everywhere that I really should have special tools to repin? Any help would be great. OK you locksmith Southwark boys, curiosity got the better of me. 1 ruined cylinder later and a whole lot clearer. It seems the key to re-pinning the yale Anti everything BS cylinder is popping out the 2 remaining pins that hold in the anti snap insert so you then have a cylinder in 2 halves. Then pin as you would a rim, but using the barrel with the pins in rather than a follower, then put it all back together, sorted.
A few things to note, both top and bottom pins are anti pick, the top pins have to 2.5mm diameter rather than the standard 2.9mm, meaning you cannot use standard pins in the pinning kits. If anyone knows where you get these pins, please let me know. There is also a shim that inserts in the bottom of the barrel that stops the bottom pins from locking in the barrel, as far as I could see the cut out in the key is to slightly change the contact area with the couplings inside the cylinder, if that makes any sense. Also be careful when knocking out the retaining pins for the anti snap, this can bend and break the anti snap on the cylinder at the front of the cylinder, a small nail to tap at the pins and cylinder secured in a vice seemed to do the trick. Hope this helps you over there at the locksmith Southwark branch. |
