Locksmith SW19 got a call from a nice young girl who had locked herself out and got the local chavs to boot in the door. Some damage caused. Afraid latch/db, 4 hooks 4 rollers MPL. Keep seemed ok at the top but most of the damage was done at the bottom.
Dented/twisted keep at the bottom and a chunk out of the frame. Top and middle of the frame was solid, at very bottom where bottom hook was a chunk out about 10cm by 5 cm of frame missing. I see a large frame screw going into brick I presume, it’s still solid and holding frame which is solid when I rock it. Damage seems mainly cosmetic on the inside by some miracle at the bottom of the frame there is a lot of frame left to screw another keep to but obviously not very secure as there is a hole behind it on the inside part facing inside. Mpl system with door open is working fine and locking. Obviously when door is closed hooks and rollers are out of line. Off I trot with the old mangled keep to the suppliers and explain situation. They recommend single section keeps. I align latch/db keep, 4 rollers, and top hook keeps in next to no time. I’m actually feeling rather triumphant and then I hit a few probs. 2 of the rollers and hooks are really close together so keeps overlap and won’t fit together.
I fit the keeps to all 4 rollers and top hook and door locks fine, checking as I go. I miss the middle 2 hook keeps out due to the overlapping problem aiming to solving that problem later as at least the door is secure. The bottom hook keep is where the fun begins. I position it, lift handle, stiff. I adjust bottom keep every bloody direction up, down, forwards, back and it still won’t have it. I figure the frame must be twisted at the bottom so the hook is coming into the frame at a slight angle and catching at the end of the day she is happy, but I want to know how you locksmith SW19 guys would have tackled this. Fitted 2 sashjammers to top and bottom also. I suppose my questions from this little excursion are.
1. Do I need to fit another fixing at the bottom of the door (are they nylon screws?) where the hole is for security and what would you do with the part that’s missing? 2. Would you have gone for a like for like single piece keep or listened to the suppliers and gone for individual ones given the situation. 3. The close cam and hook problem. Is it vital 2 of the hooks don't have keeps and if so how would you solve? 4. The frame/ bottom keep problem. How do you know which way they want adjusting when you have fitted them and they are obviously catching somewhere and not sitting in? Is there a magic trick? The door probably needs toe and heeling, regarding the keeps put door into locked position whilst open, then close the door mark with a pencil the location of the hooks on the frame obviously with the rollers you won’t see where they are locating. So put some tape on door where the rollers are so when the door is closing you can also locate the rollers, one thing to bear in mind Locksmith SW19 is that when a door is out the hooks sometimes catch on the metal reinforcing within the door frame think you’ve done what you can under the circumstances well done mate. |
