The locksmith SW4 guy got the cylinder out (snapped) found that the original problem was the part where the cam locates had broken (so could have properly got round that) but the handle part of it had completely shattered with bits everywhere so was unable to draw back the hooks.
Tried clearing it all out through the cylinder hole but wasn't having any of it, tried spreading the door but the frame was going to give before the door did. In the end I had to make another hole in the door behind where the handles would be and drill a section of the case, being careful not to disturb things further inside. After removing all kinds of bits I was finally able to retract the bolt and then the hooks, but after snapping the cylinder, drilling handles then lockcase I was thinking there had got to be a better way. Now, I hate putting holes in doors, especially this on as it was a reasonable size, but sill hidden under new handles. Don’t think you could have done anything else after the other blokes mess, would the bent screwdriver retract the hooks on one of these?
It's worth mentioning there was no letterbox and it was a 2nd floor flat. You did what needed to be done locksmith SW4 its always the same when your tidying up someone elses rubbish, you got them in which the other bloke couldn’t you’ve provided them with a new working lock which the other bloke couldn’t job well done mate. It's sometimes worth considering removing the door stop to allow access to the hooks. I've been there, so can feel what you went through. I had a Builder call me, in the same situation a few years ago. He'd got access to all his tools, and had been trying to get in for a few hours before he called me out. Luckily, there was an alternative way in. I ended up cutting the hooks off the Saracen with an angle grinder, because the mechanism was so mangled! There's always the odd one that jams completely, sure enough they are usually eras.
I’ve had a couple where I’ve drilled a line of holes down the door gap so the hooks collapse. I think if you get a shard of metal jam in the right place there's not much you can do bed wise. Today I met the Yale G712A in all its broken glory. If you have not come across this it is a gear box with 2 bolts top and bottom that are operated by rods. Got at the lock and could see all its workings but as to how it was held in place. Spent a good hour scratching head, looking gentle tug etc. then decided to cut of the mastic that had been applied around the grub screws. Thing came apart no probs, stuck an overnight on and will be replacing with a lockmaster. A like for like replacement would be an issue as they stopped making it in 1999 and the replacement I could find was £100 at the locksmith SW4 central London warehouse. |
