Locksmith Teddington said it would take about 40 mins but in 5s as the gates are wide but you don’t want to miss them if you have never done manipulation it is a mind field unless you know exactly what is going on.
You can use a pointer on these to help show gates when going at 5 or 10 through wheels, I can't remember exactly how it was showed to me but it's quick and it works on direct drive. I am looking at a job next week, to convert a normal UPVC door (I hope) to a latch type handle (split gearbox) I was going to see what type of gearbox it was and then try and track down a split gearbox, and put a pad on the outside (just for the throws) I was also thinking to split the spindle, but I am sure this would be in conjunction with the gearbox? I have seen night latches on UPVC doors, but this is for an old lady, and that would then mean 2 keys with 2 locks to get back in to her house with. (I could key them the same) This could be more than just a look at. Any suggestions would be grateful. You would have to have a split type gearbox to use split spindles. Split spindles in a standard lever/lever won’t make a difference to the operation of the lock. I would wait to see the type and size of the existing gearbox and see if you can source a suitable split type to replace it? I will strip out the gearbox, 1/2 hang it out to get the type and dimensions then try the cross reference to a split gearbox!
Locksmith Teddington have got a Customer that has a wooden sliding patio door. It's got some sort of 'Schlegel-type' (but no name at all) mechanism in a pocket in the door edge. It's the type where you lift a little lever on the inside, and outside, and two 'bolt-heads' on the edge of the door move away from each other when a plunger on the faceplate is depressed. These bolts engage into tapered slots in a plate that's screwed to the frame, then the key is turned to lock it. Both the 'bolt heads' are missing. My first thought was to remove the mechanism, and put some new 'bolts' in, but as the mechanism doesn't seem to be in particularly good shape, (feels gritty and stiff to operate when I push the plunger in on the faceplate), so am looking for suggestions for alternatives.
The distance between the edge of the door, and the glass is 80mm, so realistically I can't fit anything over 60mm wide. I was considering some sort of small hook-type mechanism, but the frame is only about 15mm thick off the brickwork, so again I can't go for anything with a massive hook without cutting into the brick. Also, because of the layout, I really need a backset of about 28mm. Centres are 48mm, and it's be good to try and use the existing handles if possible. I spoke to locksmith Teddington, who said that in the past, they had supplied a few cut-down MPL strips, just for lockcase and to use the centre hook, but said it wasn't ideal and wouldn't recommend it, so suggested I tried DG Supplyline, which I did. |
