Locksmith W10 came across some keys with bent prongs on them and recently on with 1/2 the prongs missing. I was at an old women’s bungalow with an internal 3 lever lock. She had used an adapter to hold the key and used too much force......result ended up braking part of key. (Incidentally the key wasn't steel it was the old soft ones)
Thanks, I continue to be interested in lever lock problems, so always happy to see any more contributions. Don't think I've ever seen a broken mazak (zinc) key, but I've seen some early welded keys of 50's-60's with complete bits breaking off. Must have been a very forceful woman to break a key, not just bend it; makes one wonder if the door had already dropped or otherwise binding, to need such force. Got called out last night to someone locked out. I wasn't sure about the front door lock pictured above so I opened her French windows. I took a picture of the key once I was in because I wanted to know if you can open this type of lock with an EPG? Not a very good picture but you guy's will know what it is. It's an ERA Vectis. A 5 lever mortice lock driving a multi point looking strip. You will probably need to adapt a curtain pick to fit through the escutcheon or I do know a nice guy who sells a dedicated decoder.
Five very small levers. No anti picks but some require an insane amount of tension to get things to bind. Locksmith W10 knows a few guys who now have a nice twist on their curtain picks. The escutcheon can really get in the way when trying to pick. Much easier with a lock on the bench but not so easy on a real door. The decoder is a 3 minute opening, the only skill needed is a working set of eyes I wasn't sure if it were levers or not in the lock. The de-coder is a bit much for me to splash out on at the moment especially as I have only come across this lock once. Perhaps you can advise me the alternative of what I need at our next meeting.
I’ve seen them with rubber seal around the keyway, in this part of Essex the doors with Vectis have normally been installed by Crystal glazing. Geraint does this make the plastecine read a tad more awkward. No plasticine readings needed mate. The decoder works by putting a number 1 pin in whichever hole in the makeup key corresponds to the lever you wish to decode. Insert the key, turn in the locking direction until the pin touches the back of the lever, then look on the chart and see what number the reader wire is pointing at. Repeat the process for all 5 levers then build up the key and open the door. Takes about 3 minutes to decode and open the door. I have to be a member for 7 days before I can post any videos or pictures, so as soon as I can I will pop some up for all to see on the locksmith W10 page. |
