Locksmith W4 have some useful picking/decoding tips, and it's worth having for completists, but I prefer the Angliss books oh you'll suss the decoders, you try remembering which one works in which way when you put them in the van and don't need them for a while LOL I find you need to keep refreshing yourself every so often.
I've not had to the chance to open a lever door lock in situ for ages, I think last spring, so was a little nervous when faced by a cheap 3 lever, right mounted, plus being right mounted I even struggled in the garage. Got out the 2 in 1 and it was too big for the key way, got out pick wires and couldn't find the bolt for toffee. Out of frustration I just picked up overlifter pick in it went and bosh opened, didn't even need a tension tool. Tried to act all cool like I expected that to happen, all in less than 5 mins. I've since tried this on some of my usual cheaper ones back at home and managed to do it again. So guess it does pay to at least have a go, you never know. Since that day a lot more practice has taken place, plus ordered the Angliss book and cards. All the team at the ocksmith W4 shop took this as a bit of a wake up call.
My rule if I can’t pick within say 20mins i go for the drill and flick and if it is a b of a lock i go for the stump. Very Happy if I drill I always make good the door. Just wondering if there are more lock specific wires for the multiguage other than the fortress ones, I don’t really have the facility or know how to make my own, or at least make some that work, I have a set of wires which are 3 different heights, will they work with the multiguage? There are only 2 wires with the multi gauge standard and that is all you need being a multi gauge you can slide it in to increase the lift of the wire and pull it out to reduce the length of the wire and the room to get under the levers.
Other picks are normally one gauge so they have to have varried wire lengths for certain mortise locks ie standard/fortress/legge/securefast/max wire/y wire york hope this helps. Yes any wires will work with the multi gauge but you will have to adjust the pick ie slide it in and out until the wire feels right for that lock certainly does, thanks, if I had an MG would a Prelifter still be worth having or is the MG all I would need with practice to get under those low levers, everyone says how good the MG is but I never used one. A prelifter was designed purely for the e version chubb then a bright spark over at the locksmith W4 shop used it on fortress and so on very tricky on the e version chubbs though the wires I sent you will work fine with the MG and give you slightly different heights for various door locks. |
