Locksmith West Hampstead said using a small door spreader should give you enough room to get an air wedge/upvc tool in. In what way is the mechanism broken.

I had one recently where the spindle would not drive the mechanism, but with the handle off and using a large flat bladed screwdriver I was able to manipulate the mechanism and retract the mushrooms.

Mostly mushrooms so you can barely get a decent gap. As said above, take the handle off and just drill a great big hole through the centre of the shattered spindle and you will be able to get at the teeth to retract mushrooms.

Had one to do Friday one of the mushrooms completely jammed took beads out and glass got a spreader on it still didn't move a right pig, I had to drill a hole above mushroom and put one of my home made L shape screwdrivers in and pulled it back, the window hadn't been open for a very long time and the mushroom was well rusted in.

Cheers for your reply I tried as above on the Friday but completely seized solid on the Monday I took the beads out which where a sod to remove, and removed the dgu and used the air wedge to get me some room to get at the rollers had to use a slotted screwdriver and tap roller out of keep.

Tried Duffells and had a look online, shows the new type with the complete strip, really only want the gearbox, don’t want to mess about with customers door.
Of all the gearbox's that bust in my area, the GU Europa Fastlock is probably the most common.

I think the fastlocking system was a good idea but there's a reason why on the new models GU stopped making them. I tell the customer this and fit a replacement lever/lever old style same as you had done.

There was a problem with the replica patterned old style gearbox but for the last 2 yrs they've been fine, no comebacks.

1st one I have come across with fast locking. Customer moaned when i fitted L/L Type, didn’t like the fact that you needed the key to lock from outside. GU also does a spilt spindle lock the same size, thought about that one, can see a lock out straight away.

Had this a few times now when replacing coldseal mech. The top rail on the strip is connected to the gearbox with a central hole rather than an edge cutout. The reproduction gearboxes are always designed for the edge cutout fitting.

The locksmith West Hampstead lad said ended up cutting my own notch in the rail to suit. Is it possible to get the proper part or is it obsolete? Not a major problem just makes for extra work.
