Ok locksmith Westminster went today to take a look at a UPVC lock on a front door - 20 years old apparently. I think it is an ABT Gibbons York Mk 1. Door just has 2 shoot bolts top and bottom edges (not side edges)
Was called as the handle is 'loose' , it still works ok - lift it and the bolts operate, and when taking the handles off the handle spindle operates ok and does not feel to have a lot of slack in its movement. The centre latch operates ok and has spring pressure behind it. Should the handles themselves have internal springs anywhere? There is a slim plastic part that is attached to the handles inside which the spindle passes through, but nothing else. Should I need to replace the mechanism itself - what is the procedure for disconnecting it from the 2 pushrods? As obviously they need to come off before the mechanism can be removed. Probably bread and butter stuff for most of you - but out here it seems the 2 lever mortice is still king and you only see good locks on gun cabinets. I find it is where the spindle goes into the handle and wears away. The mechanism is fine in my case. And the handle starts to droop (checked today and the plastic/spring is missing on the inside droopy handle)
Locksmith Westminster usually keep a few of these in stock. They work wonders, as long as the problem is handle-related, and nothing to do with the lockcase, which if there isn't any slack in (as you say), the 'spring cartridges' should be fine. Sounds like they could be the thing to try first, having googled with no joy do they have a specific name or should I just be looking for spring cartridges? Are there different types or are they all the same? Where from? DG supply line do them Hoppe spring handle cassettes. Page 196 of catalogue look like they are for an 8mm spindle. Shows 2 types on there. I've only seen/used the ones OAH has put up. Getting back to the first part of your listing Re: should I replace the mechanism. It seems in this case the mechanism was fine, but they do fail. See following link for door handle spring cassettes.
Around me I seem to have mostly ERA or Lockmaster mechanisms fitted and find they fail regularly. This week I replaced an era me mechanism ch that had failed in the locked position (fitted to a wooden door) and a Lockmaster that had seemingly failed too. When they fail, the me mechanism ch won't shoot the bolts when the door is in the open position and it is a simple case of removing the strip from the door (only undo the Philips head screws) and then undoing the torque head screws that hold the me mechanism ch on and then direct replacement of mech. The reason I am saying this is because I got caught out with by the locksmith Westminster boys on Wednesday. Hooks weren't coming out with the door in the open position so I changed the mech. |
