Locksmith Weybridge had exactly this fault couple days ago, the drill point does work as you have literally just got to manipulate the stump back a fraction and then withdraw the mechanism from the handles.
One of the easiest failed locked in a timber door I have ever had. No dramas at all. The first few of these I saw the problem was because the customer had not lifted the handle up the full amount and then tried turning the key jamming it in the door. I have seen a picture of these bent screw drivers to get at the workings on a MPL. Have you made your own? If so from what material? Just want to have one in the box. I use a bit of MPL strip (edge-on) now, bent and cut with serrations. Whether or not it works is down to the gearbox type, how it's failed, backset etc. There's a thread on here about using these somewhere. It's ok as another option, but one I tend to use rarely as generally you're not going to get enough leverage to move whatever is jamming up the mechanism. A mechanism usually fails because of a broken follower in which case this tool will usually work once the cylinder has been removed), or an internal part fallen off inside the mechanism, and jamming up something.
If you can exert enough leverage, then the mechanism will free-up break very happy inside, allowing the sliders to move. I bought a set of 6 screw drivers from poundland and bent one of those to shape using a butane plumbing torch. It has worked fine whenever the locksmith Weybridge team have used it and has a nice hexagonal handle on the other end. It just has to be long enough to get some leverage so use a long screwdriver. I found it best to have a few of them too, as you may need to tweak for certain locks. The milas have a little rivet in the way you need to work around. They are also handy tools for forcing hooks back in the door when total jammage has occurred. Used a fairly chunky tent peg bent one end to suit 35mm backset and the other bent to suit 45mm backset, with a pair of mole grips or pliers has worked on numerous occasions.
Have been asked to price for supply and fit 2 double doors and 2 single door exit bars. The building is already fitted with a single door one with no outside locking device. Should I advise to fit external locking device type or not. Went to change some UPVC window handles today and the handles are not the standard size. The spindle is 5mm instead of 7/8 mm and the securing screws are 35mm apart instead of 40mm. Anyone seen these before or know where I can get replacements? The owner wants to be able to lock the windows and I know I can put locking sash guards on but would be nice to change the handles oh and I should have said locksmith Weybridge, the handles are handed the espagnolette and the mechanism is internal espagnolette with shoot bolts? |
