I wonder if anyone at locksmith Whetstone can advise me please. There's a portacabin on a small industrial estate with a Euro Sash case on, and a Patons Thumbturn. The portacabin is being used as a loo (you didn't really need to know that Embarrassed). Everyone on the industrial estate has a key to the lock, which has suddenly become defective. I was told that the key wouldn't go fully home, and they thought a pin at the back wasn't dropping enough. It'd been given a good oil before I arrived, and after I probed with a pick, it became apparent the pins were all OK, but the cam was the cause of the problem, and slips. Got a feeling the butterfly was shoved up the plug.
A locksmith near me now says there are so many keys to work this lock in existence (owned by members of the Industrial Estate), I ideally need a Patons Thumbturn 35/10/35 to re-pin to the existing keys. Does anyone know where I can obtain one from please? I've found Patons website, but doubt they'd sell me just one. I'm going to check if any of the brands of Euro cylinder I have in the van, have the same key profile as the Paton Lock, but don't hold out much hope. Failing that, can anyone tell me exactly what causes a slipped cam? I know technically they cannot be repaired and made to last, but I'm wondering if putting a new cam and butterfly on the lock, would work. In some random order for an off brand lock you need the same profile, spacing’s and possibly pin diameters, so a big ask.
Easy enough to re-cam the lock and that's what I would do if you can't get another Patons lock. A mobile locksmith near me recons a slipped cam is caused by a few things, in this case I would guess at the keys being fractionally too short at the tip, if this is the case the problem will reoccur with the new lock/parts eventually. OK locksmith Whetstone I went on a warrant today and all I had to open was a cheapo rim cylinder Very Happy Lock picked (clockwise) latch not re-tracting Crying or Very sad Lock picked (anticlockwise)latch not re-tracting Surprised Used plug spinner in case double locked both clockwise and anticlockwise lock just keeps turning latch not re-tracting. Sounds like the tail is not engaging, though this seems strange if the lock is used regularly (which I presume it is). Sometimes you can put a small screwdriver in the keyway, and tap it while rotating the plug as much as possible (when picked), and it has been known to engage the tail just enough. Hammer drill against the lock with no drill bit in, can sometimes work, though it can mark the face of the cylinder, so put a piece of wood between first.
If all else fails, Mickey Mouse the cylinder, remove it and turn the slot in the backset, or if required hammer the backset off the door. (I've been there before LOL) Did you squirt GT85 in the door gap to try and get one of the thin sheets of mica in Dave? If you can get two sheets in with loads of lube between them, you can sometimes get an airbag in a little. I'm sure this wouldn't have worked on your job, but always worth bearing in mind. Cheers locksmith Whetstone. |
