Locksmith Whitechapel said is there another way. Deglaze and remove screws from inside. Screwed behind the glass, see it a lot on doors with roto mpl. I have come across long screw for euro hidden behind latch and bolt keep or otherwise it a deglaze.
The False Mullion is often held on with screws driven in from the glazing rebate side of the passive door. De-glaze passive door, undo screws and lift off false mullion. This will leave a normal approach to the cylinder retaining screw. Once replaced, re-attach false mullion, re-glaze - using toe & heel of course. Some of the false mullions fit back really easily, some have packers (or full length packer strip to sit correctly). You may need a quick grip clamp to pull some into place. All quite easy but just pay attention to removing it and putting it back will be simple. Gleaming. Never thought of that. Cheers guys. I got a load of them packers after chat at Mla. I should know mullion and muntin as joinery terms. I used to deglaze but over the years - sod it - 8mm hole and you have the retaining screw. Generally the hole is more than camouflaged by the centre keep and if not stick a bit of filler or silicone in hole if you think it is unsightly.
Deglazing is a pain way to go with potential issues such as breakage, problems with marking slips, getting packers right etc. Locksmith Whitechapel always drill a hole and cover hole if needed with white plastic self adhesive strips which I buy from b&q. In my opinion, it doesn't make it a cowboy job just because you got your drill out, it's more of a clever modification that the door manufacturer overlooked. I use the glazing packers all the time. Again, most of us are trying to do the job properly and when called out to doors that have dropped, it is mostly due to incorrect glazing, or packers that have slipped when door has expanded etc. The hinge adjustment is only really for final adjustments and I hate leaving any door when hinges are at max adjustment as if there is ever a call back, you have nowhere to go but to de-glaze anyway and whilst I don't mind de-glazing within my one hour initial charge, I would detest getting a call to go back on an foc service call and spend time doing it right then for no pay.
I would be careful about stating a manufacturer overlooking it because they have no need to provide an access hole after assembly but it is perfectly okay to express it as a legitimate modification to access a securing machine screw and to explain there is less risk to use this method and less time involved and that your price would need to reflect the additional labour and risk if the customer preferred the alternative. Agree with the locksmith Whitechapel boys about most holes are behind the central keep and not an issue and for a cylinder swap, I would probably do the same unless the door needed toe & heeling anyway. |
