We at locksmith Yorkshire when called out to pop a lock nearly always pick clockwise, but remember there is no 'correct' way on Euros/Ovals/Rim cylinders, because it depends which side of the door the lock if fitted to.
Looking from outside, if a Euro is fitted on the left hand side of the door, then it'll need to be picked clockwise. However, if it's on the right, to open it'd be anti-clockwise. It all depends on the situation really. I was talking recently to the nearest locksmith to me and he said there are times and we have all been there when nowt will open! (to boost myself I go for an old padlock I have that I know will open by just looking at it crack that and away I go) Take a break when picking to if you feel yourself about to go 'off on one' then down tools and have a a brew or leave it for that day. As DH says you will always get days when you can’t pick your own nose you will get locks that will just not pick, you will get locks that you cannot get somebody else comes along and presto! Open in seconds most of all stick at it. Thanks looks like I’m just trying too hard and having a dry spell lol! I'm due out the Army soon and looking to make this my new career and after playing catch up reading the old forum I see i have a hell of a lot to learn on this! afraid.
After only a few months with locksmith Yorkshire I’m totally hooked on locksmithing and was beginning to wander if i had bitten off more than i can chew. I'm sure with more research and constant practice it will start to get there and i can already see from the members on here that i will get plenty of help along the way. Headlocks, just to let you know, although as Simon (OAH) remarked about euros, ovals fitted left and right hand side, you may still have to pick the lock in the locking direction and then plug spin it back as sometimes a lock WILL NOT pick in the perceived correct direction. Wink As has been pointed out if you are finding problems with opening a lock 'walk away' have a brew and come back to it. The longer you spend attempting to pick the worse you will get, especially as you know you can open the lock. Thanks I have a very limited selection of old padlock and a couple of basic 2 lever mortice locks. I have been making some wire tools like over lifters I’d guess you call them from piano wire and can open the mortice locks quite easily.
I have also made a wire pick to open some old small squire warded padlocks (had to bust one open to see how it worked) but they are very basic and only took about an hour to get the hang of opening them. That’s about it for now until i buy/scrounge some different types of locks. I have just ordered a 2 in 1 mortice pick from the locksmith Yorkshire warehouse to practice with so looking forward to giving that ago. |
