On the older model we have in the work shop at the locksmiths Cobham where the curtain rotates 360 the readings are taken from the front. The newer black version the readings are taken in the locking direction.
Most awkward part is 2-3-4 are quite close and mistake can be made if rushing. I use to get a lot of grills with securefast (old blue curtain case) when I was Locksmithing and they were always welded in so I got a decoder to open them and then I could cut a key on the key machine, the black case I have never tried to open as it been 8 years since I opened a domestic lock. This looks like a Union 5 lever 2101 but is there supposed to be that much of a gap on the forend beneath the bolt? I had to change it for a customer the other day because the bolt was moving down quite a bit as the key turned making it next to impossible to get the bolt into the keep. The lock is at least 28 years old, according to the customer, and I thought the problem was probably caused by the gap being there.
Also when the lock was originally installed, the keyhole through the door was not positioned correctly and I needed to move it slightly. Btw, I installed a 3G114E 67mm. This meant that the escutcheon barely covered the hole and the fixing screws were nearly into air. Has anyone over in the locksmiths Cobham office any advice on the best fix when having to move keyholes a small distance like this? Not 100% sure what this lock is? Backsets are different between locks so will have to sometimes adjust the keyway slightly. I use stick on jumbo escutcheons if there is no wood for the screws? I have one of those sitting on my practice bench, it is a union alright. jumbo escutcheons are a really hand thing to have on your van. That's just early version on the 5l security I think? The gap shouldn't matter as the face plate will hold bolt square. A 3G114 2.5" has a 40mm backset and is always a problem when changing locks regarding key hole position that's why unless using jumbo escutcheons you always need to change a 114 for a 114. Almost any other lock would have comfortably made the existing keyhole position.
Unfortunately I didn't have anything else suitable with me and it needed doing right away. It was a real pig to rout and chisel too. Another lesson learned the hard way. Been shopping at Duffels to get a wider selection. I can’t believe that lock has sat in the door without a face plate on for 28 years (as locksmiths Cobham said - the face/forend plate would provide a nice tight rectangular hole for the bolt to slide in and out of, keeping it horizontal so the stump can pass thru levers correctly). He would have problems two decades ago! I bet someone took it off to paint/varnish door and lost it or forgot to put it back on. |
