If you've drilled a mortice lock like locksmiths in Eltham says whatever I come across that is time consuming I go and buy the lock in question and learn it. Picking is an art but learning how to open a door non picking wise is in my opinion as important as it is still something you have to do skilfully.
Not worried about eyes of law. I am talking generally. We are locksmiths not lawyers. People need to bring their backs down and read what I have said without a clouded judgement. Do not go for the drill first. And if all else fails then drill. And learn to pick right if you turn up at a job and go to drill the lock straight off ,then the customer thinks cowboy and any trust goes straight away, so at least try and pick Then the customer can see that you’ve made an effort, then when he starts looking at his watch or tapping his feet then get out the rotary pick , but learn to drill locks properly , don’t leave it looking like it’s been attacked with a shotgun . Maybe it’s my area but there isn’t any £2000 doors around here lol a lot have already been drilled/kicked open various times.
When I remove the handle and see a 2" hole behind its happy days. Wish I could curtain pick good, but I can’t, haven’t got the skills or patience. But i have a shed load of decoders and my drilling always leaves a working lock regardless of which side of the door the locks mounted. But even saying that. There will always be a job that brings you down to earth, never forget that, the last 2 mortise locks I opened in the locksmiths in Eltham area last week were both bolt side, one all the cap screws had wound out so I had a pocket in the door that consisted of a lockcase, a lock cap and a selection of levers and springs floating around in it, the second the bolt had sheared in in two internally. They don't teach that in the manual. Please don’t take this the wrong way, but your intro post says you have been trading a couple of years, you really should by now have your mortice lock ID nailed down, I can’t see how you are making a living otherwise.
Take the advice on here, start working on it now, it’s not only the basics but the fundamentals of the business. I disagree with Stuart on which manual to use, the Anglis manual is light years ahead in my opinion, get that ordered today and crack on. You asked about drill bit selection, I use a ceramic/glass drill bit to penetrate hard plate just so i can see lever movement, then i open up slightly larger with a 5-6mm hardplate and finally use an endmill to finish off so i dont dig into lever pack or leave any burr. I keep meaning to get on Locksmiths in Eltham mortice lock opening training. And I will at some point. Maybe we can meet there? |
