I haven't encountered anyone on the residential door lock side here at the locksmiths Twickenham who has, or plans to, change to electronic house locks, nor has 'internet of things' in their house, but all the admen say the future is already here now!
Happy not to have to learn to take out a soldering gun as part of my locksmith services — I struggle enough to see pins now, let alone electrons running around inside a lock! I'll stick with lost car keys and a lock out service. I have searched all normal suppliers but I can't find an exact replacement. The customer does not want the original door (house built in 1880's) damaged with extra holes so exact replacement needed (if possible) The lock case is 6" 152mm long, 3" 77mm wide backset to spindle is 5 1/4" 132mm. The keyway is 2 5/8" 58mm with a front end height of 4 3/4" 124mm. This lock has a single lever. The replacement does not have to be lockable so the keyway is not important but other measurements are crucial. Here's hoping someone can work the oracle (or point me in the right direction) Cheers guys I have attempted to upload a picture, it is only 1.06mb but still won't load is the old one repairable by any chance? I presume the door is stained or varnished otherwise surely old holes could be made good? I have more questions at locksmiths Twickenham branch but for myself this time, finding tools and parts for profile cylinders is a wee bit difficult over here I do have a supplier here in the US that I can order a Circlip removal tool and Circlip Reforming Plier from, but nothing in the way of profile cylinder parts, such as various retainer clips & rings, cams, other internal parts and such, then again in this throwaway world it may in some cases not be worthwhile to have parts on hand, but then again I do scavenge good parts from lightly used locks and other hardware...,
1 - Do you repin these locks or just swap out with new one and junk the old ones, 1A - I have not been able to find a follower with a pinning shoe groove in it for repining double sided profile cylinders, I could have a machine shop make one, diameter is easy but would need to know proper width and depth of groove. or would you know of a place to order one or more pre-made,
1A - Or for that matter a good and decent supplier of tools and parts, 2 - Is the inside diameter of most profile cylinder housings a standard diameter or are more than one diameter follower required, 3 - I have a couple of profile cylinders that have solid retainer rings ( full circle, no gap as in a "C" clip) and are held in place by being dimpled so they do not rotate, I am under the assumption I can use a small drill bit and create an opening then treat them as a "C" clip and can most likely reinstall them fairly well and redimple them in place, would this work or is there a better way, and or replacement rings 3A - What tool do you use to remove the hard steel "C" clips, preferably without damage or breaking them, or painfully driving a tiny screwdriver or sharp awl into your hand Sad 4 - Do you folks at locksmiths Twickenham have a locksmith dictionary such as this with your own terminology? 4A - a lock parts nomenclature. |
