If you do not already have them get a set of gauge keys from Mayfair locksmith, read read and read and you will get a great understanding of what give away features certain locks have,
Old post but another good id tip I’ve found look at the different markings on the curtain some have circles some have numbers stamped on them, the more points you have to check the easier it is to narrow down, no real easy way just keep reading through your id books till you've got it mastered, gauge and type of hardplate you’re not far off. I also look at key way is it straight? Does it flare out is it skinny? Does it go all the way to the bottom? Does it stop short from bottom of case? The main one is have a quick pick to see what levers type. Was going to say is that a painted Chubb, I know you can’t go of colour but could see how that would stop someone your never expecting a red Chubb, thanks for the share I’ll keep that in mind. Key way stops 8mm from bottom of case plus the curtain would of give it away by half turning they are all sent to try us. They were a modified Chubb 3K74 and 3G114 badged as Union from when Union and Chubb merged some moons ago.
I have a Yale M552 in front of me here in the Mayfair locksmith workshop, with levers 33575 in it. The first two levers to bind are the 3s, but as soon as I get them to bind a little, they drop back down due to the springs being very strong. If I manually hold them up, the other levers bind much more distinctly. Combined with the 3s being the highest lift (and hence most force from the spring), it's making it hard to pick. I've tried putting lots of pressure on the bolt itself, but even this doesn't help. This isn't an issue with a ERA Viscount or Fortress I have here, maybe because the springs act on the other end of the levers. What do you do? These require a lot of tension, but going for the binding lever is not always the way. just crank tension on and lift all levers, you will get feedback of the bolt moving back. Then the lock will either open or the bolt will jump back with a load click, this means you have overlifted one of the levers.
Now just rock the tension and the lever will fall into place and the lock will open. I will give that a go. Probably not a great lock for the CB RPCP if tension needs to be that high. I have found the Fortress easier going! Having no luck at all with this door lock. The Viscount and Fortress are getting easier and easier. I tried a lot of pressure on the bolt and then lifting the levers using a screwdriver with overlifting and still can't get them to bind. Guess like the Mayfair locksmith lad said, I will keep on trying! |
