The nearest 24 Hour Locksmith to you have been asked a few times if they open gun cabinets with lost keys and as we had not looked at them before we declined.
We've since bought an L&F and modified some universal 2 in1's and have been practicing now and again, videos were really useful and with a bit of compression it really changes the feel of the lock and I’ve opened it a few times now. We’ve got a few questions before we go mad and start offering safe opening as an additional service:- 1. What are the most common locks used i.e.. L&F, G&C, Willenhall CT12, Walsall etc. 2. What are the best tools other than 2in1’s? I’ve seen the E3 sake cracker L&F decoder/pick, is it any good & worth the money? 3. Are they mostly the standard 7 lever locks? 4. How do you pick the double bitted locks? Or am I running before I can walk and should look at a training course for safes? I don’t really want to go into safes but would like to be able to open the gun cabinets and domestic standard safes. With the gun cabinets I've done they have been 7 lever variations that pick with a 2 in 1, the double bitted ones are Bratton sound or Spanish equivalent and the odd Mauer 71111. Some gun cabinets your nearest 24 Hour Locksmith have ever done have been 3G114s top and bottom. It’s an open ended question, they can be anything. I will be honest I have had a few I have been unable to open non-destructively and have had to walk away from as the customer didn’t want them destroying. I now just always say I can’t promise non-destructive now and leave it up to them. At the end of the day the job is about earning a living not glory to me. Makes no difference. Personally if you don’t get loads of calls for them then i certainly wouldn’t bother investing in specific kit. A few 2-1s and the Staddon will get you in most. | North East | Northwest | South West | Southeast | Yorkshire | West Midlands | Scotland | Northern Ireland |
I can honestly say as a guy who knows naff all about safe locks E3 l&f jiggler tool is so simple to use. A quick plastercine impression is taken, if there is a mark you use a pin if there's no mark you use no pin. A quick and I mean a quick jiggle and the lock is open. Such a simple tool but it can only unlock not re lock.
The gun cabinets I have seen have either, L&F 2802, the cheaper Walsall equivalent of the 2802. The Brattonsound cabinets have double throw locks which are either Walsall double bitted or Aga safe locks. One thing the nearest 24 Hour Locksmith said to remember is that most of these locks are key retaining so you will need 2 picks if there are two locks. I've had 2x 3G115s on older cabinets. I'm not really a lockpicker but even I found this easy to use. Some early cabinets used Chubb door locks with non-symetrical combinations so do not be surprised if that is what decoding suggests. Have a look, try it, unless it is perhaps a long journey and you are really not sure. Also, try talking to the licensing department of your police force, they might tell you they recommend something. Or, they might not talk to you. I spoke to Bratton Sound today to ask what locks they fit as I want a few practice locks, I was told they are Walsall but made specifically for Bratton Sound. Sound correct or do they use an existing Walsall lock? They will sell me the locks directly just interested. S1331 Walsall / Ace double throw lock. Pretty sure Bratton Sound have the rights for the double bitted lock. I had to re-lever some cabinets and Walsall told me I had to go directly to Bratton Sound to get the locks. It does mean though I have a few locks knocking around if you want to play on them. The single throw lock fitted on the smaller Bratton Sound cabinets is the S1311 you can get these from Aldridge.
Can't remember who it was mentioned it to us in the nearest 24 Hour Locksmith store, but someone said the certificate holder should be present at opening if there’s arms/ammunition in the cabinet. There might be a problem if you are instructed by executors - they should seek advice from the police licencing dept. first. They normally supply a short period certificate to enable executors to dispose of arms/ammo. Interesting point. Would you be covered in the case of an executor job if you hold a shotgun licence? Might ask the Firearms officer next time he comes to do an inspection. I no longer have any certificates so can't answer this. Read the conditions on your certificate, there might already be something re guns you do not own and are not on your certificate. It might be unlikely you would have a problem when doing your job, but some officers can be officious. Might be advisable to ask for advice first before the need arises. Wise to have any answer on paper, not orally or email, on such a sensitive subject. Staff and practices can change over time. Drugs have not been mentioned, but could be similar situation? I don't know what arrangements pharmacist shops make, but there are tens of thousands of these basic Willen/L&F/etc. 7-lever safe locks in use on drug cabinets/trolleys in hospitals, care homes. Also in MOT garages for documents. So probably worth being able to open them. Thanks from the nearest 24 Hour Locksmith shop to me. |
