The icl manual was recommended by the Palmers Green locksmith its full of info that will help him learn. Agreed books as I have them all on my phone. But they are for I'd only. I was trying to help with all stuff which the icl manual has.
Each to their own. He will have to find his own way. Simon no course or book will help in the case of the lock you had I wasn’t having a pop honest. For a start I wouldn’t get into a row with yourself over mortice lock opening because I would lose, your talents are obvious. Too be honest mate my judgement is clouded, I don’t like the ICL for my own reasons. Sorry if you took offense it wasn’t intended. But the Anglis book is what is needed right now just to get the basics nailed I reckon. Looks like I raised a bit of a sore topic. But nonetheless the info given by all of you really helps. I just need to do a bit more studying I guess and practicing. If anyone is coming to the members meeting and has some picks maybe you could bring them so I can check them out as I know there a few different picks out there. Back in the day I was taught to drill lever locks open with the least damage this was a 100% opening, If you can pick the lock then that’s fine but if you can’t you can still open it and get paid,
I am not a great lock picker myself, the things I find that help is having the right tool or control over the pick and understanding what’s coming back via the tool, For me when I was a locksmith picking locks was a small part of the job, so to some it might be all they do all day such as warrant work where non-destructive is preferred. Just need the right tools that work for you and practice I was looking at doing the two day mortise locks course. Since I have been trading I have not been asked to open any front door mortice locks. It's all cylinders and euro. So I definitely need to brush up and practice opening lock out house call outs. However, as an employee of Palmers Green locksmith shop, it has been decided that I am going to spend the rest of the year abroad.
So no chance of getting any work, and I may have to wait until next year now until I can do the mortice course I've got a few manuals, the only ones I use now are the angliss manuals, along with gauge keys when needed. The only locks I struggle with identifying sometimes are old non curtain type. I'll admit I've never picked/decoded a bs mortice or padlock on a warrant yet (have done on private jobs) but that is all about to change as I've just invested in a few new picks and decoders. I will be locking myself in my garage for the next month until I have them sussed! I've got an autographed copy of the ICL Manual LOL. The main thing I've got against the book is that there are the rim lock sashlock and the deadlock versions of each lock. We at the Palmers Green locksmith still recommend it though. |
