Been to one particular job for the Putney locksmith shop 3 times over last 18 months as it keeps giving problems (to a 80+ pensioner) I've come across a couple of these failing , fortunately in the unlocked position. Rather than fit a replacement vectis lock I’ve fitted a Euro lock gearbox instead.
I like the theory behind them ie a mortise lock but multipoint The reality is that they tried to fit what should be in a 65-75mm backset into a 35mm & 45mm backset thus small levers etc. Pity others didn't do a Chinese and take the poor vectis and turn it into a good mortice multipoint. That said, where we would be without the bread and butter euro changes. Ever since I realised you can replace with a euro gearbox that's what I've been doing. Not met a single person that likes them. Apologies if this picture had not come out correctly. I had this lock out situation last night on a job in the Putney locksmith shops area and struggled to ID the door lock. I could not see any features on the hard plate. The hard plate looks hardened/full and is a 5 lever.
I thought it was an old 3G114 but my lack of experience with mortice door locks has struck me on this occasion. I'm going back tonight to finish the job so any help would be grateful. I'd go for a Chubb 3g114 but not sure either spin the curtain then take another pic. Then look up at the levers are they brass? What do the bellies look like. I carry cut down blanks to test gauge as this automatically narrows my search considerably. I had an old 3G114 but I can't find it. I think it has a Hammerite texture and brass curtain, drag a screwdriver round the curtain edge to see. I think there is a Henderson that looks the same and could be dark blue/black with a metal curtain with a small notch at the top, could be hard to see. Could be dark blue/black with a metal curtain with a small notch at the top, could be hard to see if corroded. My guess is a crusty old imperial door lock. When they're that rough it's a tough call.
Stick a rule into the door jam and measure the backset, that will tell you if its a 114 or not straight away. It's a big keyway, see if it's 4.5 or 5 g. Initial guess is a Chubb 3K75 as it looks gold on my phone. Assume you took the escutcheon off and it was Chubb, as you can't see any hardplate signs, i.e. Wrap round, half way, oval, short and so on doesn't mean the last person actually fitted a lock with a hardplate. Looks silver on my laptop, but could be wrong? Could be an old 114 but should have an oval hard plate, but as one of the boys at the Putney locksmith shop says this could not have been fitted as they were once detachable to reverse handing. What is the backset to the keyhole as got caught with one which looked similar and it turned out to be a 3G220 narrow style Chubb lock. |
