South London locksmith said in their opinion it also needs to be 'off-set' correctly so when you turn the wire to lift It doesn't get snagged on the blade of the key that has been left. If it does this will make it feel as you have described as well.
To correct it, place the wire down on a flat surface so the offset part of the wire upstand is raised, then just tap it down slightly with a hammer, straightening it up a little. This will stop it getting snagged on the key? You were spot on, opened the case to see how the wire sat in the lock and the off set on the wire was catching on the key blade stopping the wire from touching the levers about 2mm from the belly of the lever. Didn't want to start messing about with the Original wires so made up a couple of new ones. I’m glad I did because I'm rubbish at making wires so it was good practice. I just copied the originals and tapped down the off set, stuck it in and could feel them lifting. Picked away for ten minutes and she opened!! I was a bit shocked to be honest as I'm usually no good at homemade tools and I had struggled with these locks for so long. Thanks a lot for the advice it is much appreciated.
Do locksmiths still use try-out keys on 2 and 3 lever locks? It’s just they seem very easy and probably consumes more time trying them out, than it does to use a 2-1 pick. I use them. They've worked well for me on several occasions, and personally I prefer them to a selection of 2-in-1, which all have to be 'sized' for the lock. Much less expensive option too. I bought a set and they work great on the 3 levers I’ve got. I use a wire on the bolt and overlift them. I used them to open a 5L the other day. Will use anything that gets the job done. I suppose South London locksmith it's each to their own. I use the try out keys as well, and then overlifters then two wires, most of the time. Too many 2 lever locks have bullet wards and many 3 levers need a vast amount of tension which I can't seem to get with the 2 in 1.
Used them yesterday on a summer house. Took 10 secs. Always worth a try used some round at stars house last week for the first time, they worked great on 3 lever unions. Its 3 lever unions I'm using them on and they all go easy. One of them was on my front door changed it now. They are well worth the money unlike the 5 lever try out keys I use the try-out keys and I rate them, usually a very quick way of getting the job done. As the South London locksmith team said anything that gives you another option when a customer says I'm locked in my house is always worth having in your tool bag. I’ve got a set of the 2 & 3 lever try out keys, and the time saved using them than a 2 in 1 pick have been well worth the investment. |
