As the guys down at SW locksmith pointed out different locks have different shaped keyways. You buy bump keys to fit specific locks. I imagine your only problem is that you do not have a bump key for the lock in question. You could make your own bump key, but you would need a key blank that was specific for the lock you are trying to open.
Also turn the lock over so that you are looking at the bottom of it and you will see blanking studs inserted into the cylinder 5 studs = 5 pins Now those pins could be standard pins or security pins the type of pins in the lock is not displayed. Cheers Really you should be trying to pick the lock initially not bump or rake it, buy a few cheap ones from the hardware store to practice on, try and feel through your fingers what is happening within the lock, also take a look in the video section, lots of helpful information put up by professional people on this site. A locksmith in my area proffered the opinion locksmith change locks not pick and repair, I do not agree with that what do you think? Unions are very easy to pick, remember to apply very light pressure on the tension wrench, gently place the pick into the back of the lock then slowly and without pressure let it come forwards over the pins, that way you will hear each pin click as you pass over it.
You will also notice which one's are free and which ones are binding...start with the binding pins. do not force them down into position, they just need a gentle touch you're too kind. I should be able to dig out a few union keys at the SW locksmith shop. Should not be a problem. Thanks though. You make picking sound so easy. I've been swearing at this thing for the last ten minutes but it won't open. I reckon I'm just not gentle enough yet. I think I'm going to have to get myself onto one of Jays courses sharpish. The key to easy picking is to have the tension under control....when I first started I was far to heavy handed even though I thought I was being gentle on the tension....you need only just touch the tension wrench initially, it will feel to you that you are just resting your finger on it.
Visit the video section and youtube for lots of info. check out DH's video's he does plenty of work with cylinder locks also strips them down with good clear descriptions of what is happening in the lock. A bump key suitable for a Union wont necessarily say 'Union' on it. Chances are, it's be cut onto a key made by 'JMA', or 'Silca', or 'HD' etc. Some DO cut bump keys on the 'Branded Key Blank' but many don't as there really isn't a need if they are labeled, and using a 'JMA' blank etc. keeps costs down, as genuine keys are more expensive. So as they said in the SW locksmith shop the basic rule for bumping is, if the key fits the profile, then it 'may' well work, so always worth a try. |
